Scene 3:

1. Explain the turn in the relationship between Brutus and Cassius.

Answer- During the beginning of the play, Brutus and Cassius were close friends. They conspired against Caesar together and eventually assassinated him together. Once Caesar has died, they are next to come into power if they can persuade the Romans into following them. Now that this time as come, Brutus and Cassius begin to dispute about childish things that are irrelevant to the goodness of Rome. At the end of the Act 4 scene 3, they realize what they're doing and make peace with each other.

2. How does Portia die?

Answer- Since Brutus is never home and Portia is constantly worrying about him, she commits suicide by swallowing burning coals.

3. Explain the disagreement that Brutus and Cassius have about the battle strategy.

Answer- In this disagreement, Brutus says that they should march to the Philippi and attack the other army. Cassius disagrees and says they should wait until the army comes to them. This disagreement only prolongs their feud.

4. What unexpected visitor does Brutus see when everyone else is asleep? How does this relate to the theme of the supernatural in Shakespeare's work?

Answer- Brutus sees the ghost of Caesar. The ghost tells him that Brutus will see him at Philippi. This somewhat foreshadows what will happen at the battle. Shakespeare uses the theme of the supernatural as an element of foreshadowing and suspense.
Shakespeare uses the supernatural theme in other works such as Romeo and Juliet, when the stars hold Romeo's fate.

Act4 Scene1
1.) Anthony wants the will and tells Lepidus to go to the home of Caesar and retrieve it, to bring back to him. They basically want to change his will and make it so that other people would not receive so much of Caesar’s things. If Lepidus did this they would find a way to reduce his bequests to the people.
2.) There were many reasons why Antony would of let Lepidus choose who should die. The reason Antony said was that he was going to kill Lepidus’s brother, He told him this because Lepidus might wish to save his brother and murder someone else.
Scene2
1.) Brutus suggests to Cassius that they should move into the tent. This is because he knows they are about to begin a huge argument. Neither of them would want their armies to see this, being afraid of the consequences.
Scene3
1.) Brutus and Cassius use to be great friends as they killed Caesar together. Throughout their argument they fought so gruesomely they almost made rid of each other. In the end they settled their differences and worked everything out to become great friends again.
2.) After Caesar died she was very depressed and of great despair. Later she swallowed burning coal. This got into her body, penetrating her organs, and leading to suicidal her death.
3.) Brutus and Cassius thought of the battle strategy in different ways. Cassius wanted to wait and let the army come to them. On the other hand, Brutus wanted to march to the Philippi army and fight immediately.
4.) Brutus very unexpectedly sees an evil spirit of Caesar. This relates to theme in many ways. The main theme though is that this is very supernatural because Brutus sees a Ghost. Also in Romeo and Juliet Shakespeare writes that the stars foretell the future, which is also strange and indifferent.

ACT 4, SCENE 2

1. Antony wants Lepidus to retrieve Ceasar's will so that he can alter it and reduce what Caesar had requested be left for the people.

2. Antony is going to have Lepidus' brother killed, and he also feels that Lepidus is a man only fit to do errands and when he is no longer useful, they will take from him his momentary position of power.
"And having brought our treasure where we will,
Then take we down his load and turn him off,
Like to the empty ass, to shake his ears
And graze in commons."

SCENE 2

1. They are arguing, and they do not want to shake their armies' faith in them by arguing in front of them.

SCENE 3

1. They are both nervous and are angry at each other when they first meet, ready to kill each other in fact, but once they move into the tent, they make up, and Brutus reveals that Portia has died and that that had fueled his anger at Cassius and his frustration in general.

2. She was frustrated with how much Brutus was gone, and she was worried for him now that his enemies Octavius and Antony were so strong that she, out of despair, committed suicide by swallowing burning coals.

3. Brutus wants to make the advance and march on the army at Philippi, because he feels that the people between him and Philippi are loyal to him, and that they would be willing to join their cause and fight for them. Cassius however wants the other army to march on them so that they tire their soldiers and waste their provisions while his army stays rested and ready to fight.

4. Brutus sees the ghost of himself, his evil spirit. His ghost tells him that he'll see him again at Philippi. This is foreshadowing that Brutus will die in the fight and this relates to the supernatural in an obvious way, a ghost simply appears, are not ghosts supernatural?

ACT 5, SCENE 1

1. He says that he will not commit suicide, and he will not allow himself to be taken through Rome in chains.

SCENE 2

1. He is feeling confident. He thinks that Octavius' forces are weakening and that his army should attack quickly and overwhelm them.

SCENE 3

1. He takes Cassius' sword and kills himself with it.

SCENE 4

1. He pretends to be Brutus so that the enemy soldiers will kill him and think the real Brutus dead so that he can get away.

SCENE 5

1. He has Volumnius hold his sword for him, so that he may run on it and impale himself.

2. He says that the other conspirators killed Caesar out of jealousy and that only Brutus killed Caesar out of honest motives. Because he thought that killing Caesar would be for the greater good of Rome.

Act 4, Scene 1
1.He takes it and divides it among the people. In the will it gives parts of his possession to them.
2.He was a great man and was helpful in the deciding process. Antony said if they divide the world into three parts he would give him one part. He must have great characteristics in the eye of Marc Antony so he will let him help in choosing who shall die. Also his brother was one of the conspirators.
Act 4, Scene 2
1.Brutus asks Cassius to talk because Cassius was made at him. He didn’t know the cause or reason for his anger and wanted to know. They did work it out in the tent.
Act 4, Scene 3
1.The relationship between Brutus and Cassius at this time is close. They worked it out in the tent and are closer than ever as friends. They combined their soldiers to work against Antony. They are friends until the end and greatly respect him.
2.She was worried about Brutus. In the time she thought he was dead so she swallowed some hot, burning coals and died. Even though he lived to here her story.
3.Brutus wanted to march to Philippi immediately where Marc Antony was. However Cassius thought it was a bad idea because he said that it they stayed there they would be well rested and energetic. As Marc Antony’s soldiers would be tired weakening there own capacities.
4.In the night Brutus sees a ghost. Some say it was the ghost of Caesar haunting him. It relates to the supernatural in Shakespeare’s work due to it was a ghost, which is not real (maybe). It connects to the earlier parts of Julius Caesar when omens were foreshadowing of the bad things about to happen.
Act 5, Scene 1
1.He said he would never be lead through the streets of Rome and he said that he would never commit suicide out of fear.
Act 5, Scene 2

Act 5, Scene 3
1.Titinius takes the crown of leaves, that Brutus told him to give to Cassius, and put it on his head. Then he takes the sword that killed both Caesar and Cassius and killed him.
Act 5, Scene 4
1.Lucillius pretended to be Brutus. That was because the soldiers of Marc Antony’s wanted Brutus and to help save him he told them he was Brutus. They wanted to kill Brutus for the honor; so noble Lucillius told him he was Brutus.
Act 5, Scene 4
1.He told his servants to hold his sword while he ran into the sword and kill himself. In which he did do and died out of sorrow. After Strato was the only one that had the courage to do it.
2.Brutus was better man than the others due to all the others, Antony said, acted out of jealousy as he acted from honesty and for the general good. He said that Brutus, “That was a Man,” in sight that he did all this for his people.

-Brutus and Cassius were very close towards the beginning of the play. They bonded and grew their friendship by agreeing that Caesar should die. The two of them urged for power over Rome and by the time it was finally their chance to rule, Cassius ignited arguments over silly things. They played the blame game for a while and made many accusations of wrong doing. "You wrong me every way." Eventually though, the two friends realized how childish they were acting and put their disagreements aside.

He made a good point when he said "So shall he waste his means, weary his soldiers, Doing himself offense, whilst we, lying still, Are full of rest, defense, and nimbleness." Brutus, contrary to Cassius' thoughts, voiced his opinion and pointed out that the Philippi army would only grow larger with time. This conflict added to the tension that was already between the two.

4. What unexpected visitor does Brutus see when everyone else is asleep? How does this relate to the theme of the supernatural in Shakespeare's work?
-Caesar’s ghost came to visit Brutus during the night. Shakespeare used this supernatural occurrence as foreshadowing. "To tell thee thou shalt see me at Philippi." He says that instead, they should meet the enemy just outside of Philippi, while they still have many men and arms.

And having brought our treasure where we will, then take we down his load and turn him off.” Although Lepidus will take some of the glory, it will be under the direction of Antony and Octavius. Once they get what the want out of him, the will get rid of him, and allow him to take the burden for their actions.

We, at the height, are ready to decline.” Cassius on the other hand, believes that they should wait for the Philippians to come to them, and in the process the men will tire, and use all their supplies. In the end, Cassius gives up, and agrees to go forward and meet the army at Philippi.

Tyler Hurst – Period #2 - Act IV and V Questions – October 2nd 2008
Act IV Questions
Scene i
1. What does Antony say they will do to Caesar’s will?
Antony says they will “cut off some charge in legacies”. In saying this, Antony makes it clear that he will try and reduce all the generous offers Caesar made to the people. I think this goes to show that Antony will do what he sees fit no matter what now that Caesar is dead. It is hard to believe that Antony has transformed himself from a loyal servant of Caesar to a leader who ignores the requests of his once admirable friend.
2. What reason does Antony give letting Lepidus help in choosing who shall die?
He is simply manipulating Lepidus into a tool that he can use to commit his evil deeds. Antony is hoping that Lepidus can be blamed for many of the evil acts Antony orders and that Lepidus can also help share the blame.
Scene ii
1. Why does Brutus suggest that he and Cassius talk inside the tent?
Brutus doesn’t think it is a good idea to argue in front of two armies who are going to fight together against a common enemy. He wants the troops to see that he and Cassius are united in a common cause and bickering in front of the troops can make them question their ability and lose their support.
Scene iii
1. Explain the turn in the relationship between Brutus and Cassius.
The turn occurs when Brutus calls Cassius corrupt and begins a dispute over Cassius not lending money to Brutus’ army. They get in a very heated argument over all this, but surprisingly enough make up. I think that this argument actually brings them close together. They have been acting as if they were true friends throughout the entire play, as Cassius tries to flatter Brutus in any way possible. They have finally come to terms with each other and faced the reality of the situation. After this argument, they have a good understanding of each other. This fight actually unites them and makes me have a much higher opinion of both Brutus and Cassius afterwards.
2. How does Portia die?
She dies a horrible death by committing suicide by swallowing hot coals from the fire.
3. Explain the disagreement that Brutus and Cassius have about the battle strategy.
Brutus wants to march immediately into Philippi whereas Cassius wants to stay and fight where they are. Brutus persuades Cassius to go and meet them because he knows the people surrounding them will support Antony and Octavius and will turn against Cassius and Brutus. The only reason local residents are supporting their armies are because they are forced to.
4. What unexpected visitor does Brutus see when everyone else is asleep? How does this relate to the theme of the supernatural in Shakespeare's work?
Brutus sees the ghost of Julius Caesar when everyone else is asleep. This relates to the supernatural theme because there are many instances in which odd omens and warnings are sent to the characters. The belief of the supernatural and the non-belief of coincidences are common throughout the entire play.
Act V Questions
Scene i
1. What are two things Brutus says he will never do, even if he wins the war?
a. He will never kill himself.
b. He will not allow himself to be “paraded” through the streets of Rome in chains.
Scene ii
1. How does Brutus feel about the battle at this point?
He is very confident and is planning a quick attack against Octavius’ army.
Scene iii
1. What does Titinius do when Messala goes to inform Brutus of Cassius’s death?
He commits suicide because he is so disappointed about Cassius’ killing himself. It is an extreme act of loyalty.
Scene iv
1. Who does Lucilius pretend to be? Why?
He pretends to be Brutus hoping they will kill him so the real, honorable Brutus could get away. This is another example of the extreme loyalty that these “Servants” have for their masters/friends.
Scene v
1. How does Brutus die?
He runs into a blade held by a servant, thus killing himself.
2. According to Mark Antony, why is Brutus better than the other conspirators?
Because Brutus didn’t kill Caesar for personal gain or revenge, but he killed Caesar out of his love for the Roman populace.

Act IV
Scene 1

1.) What does Antony say they will do to Caesar’s will?

Answer:
In the play Antony told Lepidus “Fetch the will hither, and we shall determine how to cut off some charge in legacies.” When he said this he was trying to find a way to reduce the amount of things the people received from Caesar.

2.) What reason does Antony give letting Lepidus help in choosing who shall die?

Answer:
Antony decides to let Lepidus help chose who dies because Antony wants to kill Lepidus’s brother. When Lepidus finds out he said that Antony’s nephew has to die too.

Scene 2.

1.) Why does Brutus suggest that he and Cassius talk inside the tent?

Answer:
Brutus suggests talking in the tent because they are arguing. Both Brutus and Cassius have their armies with them and they don’t need to see their leaders fighting. Brutus said in the play, “ Before the eyes of both our armies here, which should perceive nothing but love from us.” What he meant by saying this was that if our armies see us fighting they will turn chaotic and we would lose our soldiers.

Scene 3

1) Explain the turn in the relationship between Brutus and Cassius.
Answer:
When the play began Cassius and Brutus were best friends. They worked together to conspire against Caesar and kill him. The problem with that was when Caesar died both of them was able to take his place if they could get the Roman people to follow them. Since that happened Brutus and Cassius fight over little things that wouldn’t even pertain to the goodness of Rome. At the end of the scene they realize what they are doing and become friends again.

2. How does Portia die?
Answer:
Brutus was never at home and Portia constantly worries about him, which made her commit suicide by swallowing burning coals.

3) Explain the disagreement that Brutus and Cassius have about the battle strategy.
Answer:
In this argument Brutus thinks that they should take their soldiers and march Philippi and attack the other army. Cassius thinks that they should stay where they are and wait for the army to come to them, which just prolongs their argument.

4.) What unexpected visitor does Brutus see when everyone else is asleep? How does this relate to the theme of the supernatural in Shakespeare's work?

Answer:
Brutus sees the ghost of Caesar. The ghost tells him that he will see Brutus at Philippi. When this happens it foreshadows what happened at the battle. Shakespeare used the supernatural as an element of foreshadowing and suspense.
Shakespeare used the theme of supernatural in Romeo and Juliet also because of the stars holding Romeo’s fate.

Act V -

Scene 2.

1. Why does Brutus suggest that he and Cassius talk inside the tent?
Brutus suggests that he and Cassius converse in the tent because Cassius had brought the whole army with him. Brutus fears that with him and Cassius being ill tempered a great argument would occur so he invites him into the tent. The tent is working as a shelter, sheltering the armies away from Cassius and Brutus quarreling.

Scene 3:

1. Explain the turn in the relationship between Brutus and Cassius.
The relationship between Brutus and Cassius had many twist and turns. Their relationship begins to turn when Cassius accuses Brutus of wronging him. The argument involved insulting each other, and Cassius telling Brutus to kill him just as he killed Caesar. Brutus then tells Cassius to put his dagger away, and explains that they are merely ill tempered. Cassius and Brutus then forgive each other.

2. How does Portia die?
Portia killed herself by swallowing fire.

3. Explain the disagreement that Brutus and Cassius have about the battle strategy.

4. What unexpected visitor does Brutus see when everyone else is asleep? How does this relate to the theme of the supernatural in Shakespeare's work?
While Brutus is asleep he has an unexpected visitor identified as the ghost of Caesar. When Brutus asks him to identify himself he said that he was “an evil spirit”. The ghost of Caesar goes on to say that they will meet again at Philippi, and then disappears. This relates to the theme of the supernatural in Shakespeare’s work because, a ghostly figure of someone is something that is not very common. No one else claimed to see the ghost; Brutus then knows that this supernatural figure had intentions of visiting him only.

Act V -

Act 4 & 5 Questions
9/29/08
2nd period
Amanda Harris

-Act 4-

Scene 1:
1) In scene one Antony is talking to Lepidus, he tells him to go get Caesar’s will and they will figure out a way to reduce the gifts that Caesar left to his people. He obviously doesn’t want the people to get as much as Caesar left them. So, he plans to change the will entirely.
2) The reason that Antony gives for letting Lepidus help with choosing who should die was that he would also be guilty in everything. And it would no longer be just him. The other reason is that he feels it is honorable to Lepidus to be able to say that he had a part in the decision. Antony also feels that Lepidus would be a good worker, and that he would do as he was directed.

Scene 2:
1) In scene two Brutus was talking to Lucillius and then he asked him if he could have a word with him. When he pulled him aside he asked for Lucillius to tell him how Cassius treated him. He wanted to be able to put his mind at rest. The reason that he pulled him aside was so that he could talk privately to him. And also so that Lucillius could speak freely without fear that he would be overheard.

Scene 3:
1) The relationship between both Brutus and Cassius is starting to change. They started out as partners, and were able to get along. But, now Cassius believes that Brutus has wronged him. So, he is angry and disappointed with him. Brutus has been trying to keep him calm, but it doesn’t seem to be working. Brutus ends up telling Cassius exactly what he thought of him, saying that he was greedy. But the end up making up by shaking hands. Cassius asks him if he had enough love for him to be patient with his bad temper.
2) In this scene Brutus learns that his wife Portia is dead. But, how she died is a strange question. What happened was she was worried about Brutus’ absence and she swallowed burning coals. So she killed herself. (In my opinion that was a really stupid move. And it was an immature move just because she didn’t have a reason to, just because Brutus wasn’t there. I don’t understand why she would do that. It sickens me; it may have been easier to understand if she had a better reason.)
3) Brutus and Cassius do not agree on the battle plan because Brutus wants to go and attack the Philippi now. But Cassius disagrees. He stated that it is better for the enemy to come to them, rather than to come to the enemy.
4) An unexpected guest visits Brutus while everyone is asleep. That unexpected guess is the ghost of Caesar. The ghost represents the theme of the supernatural in Shakespeare’s play because ghosts are not natural. They are not thought of to be real, and they are categorized as part of the supernatural because they are spirits that have came back from the dead. Or they are known as just spirits. But, they aren’t thought of to be real.

Act 5-

Scene 1:
1) Brutus said that even if he lost the war he would not result into crazy actions. One of the things that he said that he would not do was commit suicide. His wife had already committed suicide earlier in the play. And also, the second thing that he stated that he wouldn’t do was let himself be brought back to Rome in chains. That would show that he was weak. And he said that his mind was too great for that.
Scene 2:
1) Brutus now feels like the war could be won. He is saying that they should advance quickly. He said that he feels that Octavius’s side is a bit weak now, and just a sudden push would make them win. He wants to win the war, and he believes now that they may have a chance.

Scene 3:
1) While Messala was away Titinius he was supposed to look for Pindarus, but instead he took the wreath that was on his head and placed it on Cassius’s. He told him that Brutus ordered him to give it to him, and that he will do what he says. Then he ends up stabbing himself with Cassius’s sword. He did it because he felt guilty because he thought that Cassius killed himself because he thought they lost the war. But, as it turned out they did not lose the war, but Titinius did not get there in time to give him the wreath of victory. So, he feels that the death of Cassius is his fault, because he didn’t diliver the news quick enough.

Scene 4:
1) In scene four Lucillius pretends to be someone he isn’t. He pretends to be Brutus. He pretended to be Brutus because there were people after him. He was being loyal, and he was planning on taking Brutus’s punishment for him. He was being a noble soldier.

Scene 5:
1) In this scene Brutus dies. Strato was holding his sword and he Brutus ran upon it. He was willing to die, and as he was dieing he told Caesar to rest because he didn’t kill him half willing. Strato helped Brutus kill himself, he was the one who held the sword.
2) He said that Brutus was better because he did it out of being loyal. But, that was also his downfall. He was more easy to win over because of his loyalty.
