Questions 2

1) Jerry’s universe has its similarities and differences with mine. His everyday bloodthirsty high school life is very similar to mine. In his sports career, everyone is pushing and shoving, doing anything, to earn spots on the team. Jerry’s high school teachers, like Brother Leon, are far different than ones that I have. None of mine deliberately harass students. Also, there are no groups like The Vigils that rule our school. Although there are a handful of students like Archie Costello who manipulate students and teachers to have their way with anything. The universe that Cormier creates accurately captures the life of any high school student.
2) The grotesque ways of Archie,
leave many students in distress.
His brilliance explodes like a hand grenade,
his mind cocked with the next assignment,
leaves many students in frantic exasperation.

I chose grotesque to describe Archie’s ways because they are very dark and ugly. I chose a hand grenade to describe his brilliance because it is a simile that accurately paints an image in the reader’s mind. His mind being cocked keeps the comparison of Archie being a weapon alive. And Archie leaving the students in exasperations shows how the students fear and await him.
3) At first, Jerry’s reason for not selling the chocolates is due to a Vigils assignment. They choose Renault to defy Brother Leon and his chocolate sale. At first, Jerry complies with the assignment. After the assignment is over, Jerry still does not sell the chocolates. Jerry’s reason to not sale the chocolates becomes more than the assignment from The Vigils. He does this to defy The Vigils and stand up to their rule on Trinity. Jerry wants to stand up to his bullies and prove he is not scared to challenge The Vigils. Jerry’s stunt proves to the students that anyone can stand up to their bullies and even defy The Vigils.

1) Brother Eugene is an adult being bullied in the novel. He gets bullied by The Vigils and their assignment of Room Nineteen conducted by The Goob.
2) The protagonist of the novel is Jerry Renault. The protagonist is the main character of a novel that faces day-to-day struggles. Jerry’s story is about him having to refuse to sell chocolates, an order from the infamous Vigils, and being bullied constantly.
3) Every student should not be required to be an advocate of school spirit. It is a privilege, not a right. Since we are provided schools and are forced to where we go, we should not have to be enthusiastic about our school.
4) The Goober is a tall lanky student at Trinity who plays football. He is targeted for a Vigils assignment, which was Room Nineteen. This assignment really has had an impact on him. It makes him unable to sleep at night and also have reoccurring thoughts of Brother Eugene. This makes The Goober a victim of a bully.
5) Tubs Casper had a bad experience selling chocolates because he had to use the money he made to spend on his girlfriend. He also had to steal money from his father to balance his budget. Paul tried to sell his chocolates to a mother with her hands full because of her children. She did not buy chocolates, making Paul embarrassed.

7) I think that the world is made up of victimizers. Everyone who either has importance, money, or power in their lives have probably victimized someone at some point in their life to be where they’re at. You see people on television everyday being victimizers to be on top, such as Bernie Madoff.
8) Archie tips off Brother Jacques to stay one step ahead of the students carrying out the assignment. He likes to have power and tipping off Brother Jacques is one way he can show this power.
9) He refuses to sell the chocolates at first because of the assignment. I believe that Jerry does not sell the chocolates after the assignment is over because he is trying to get back at Brother Leon. Jerry is very aware of how Leon bullies students like Bailey and this is a way to get back at him
10) Mental stress puts you in the state of mind that you actually are having physical ailments. Even though you may not be physically sick, your mind makes you believe that. I personally have not experienced this but I have heard many situations where mental and physical stresses are connected.
12) The teachers should do something about The Vigils but if the teachers tried to act, the Vigils would only retaliate. The Vigils have too much power over the school and its students for the teachers to be able to stop them. Yes, I would want The Vigils to be stopped but their power is too dominate to be reckoned with.
13) The other students do not like The Vigils but they accept the fact that The Vigils are in control at the school. For example, all of the students that talk about Jerry not selling chocolates say something like, “It started out as a Vigils assignment, but I’m not sure now.” They talk about Vigils assignments like they are an everyday event.
14) The antagonist of the novel is Archie Costello. He is the one that sets up Jerry Renault’s inner conflict. Archie is the leader of a group called The Vigils. The Vigils are a group that rules the school by giving students assignments and bullying students. Archie is a master mind at manipulating people and getting his way with everything.

PRE READING QUESTIONS #2
Kaleb Kozeeeeeeeee

1. Jerry doesn’t fit in the universe in which he resides. Jerry lives in an undecided universe. His lifestyle draws for a lawful base, for Jerry has a strict schedule. But Trinity is such a chaotic setting, so Jerry probably feels quite tossed up, giving him a sense of neutrality. My universe is quite chaotic…but I like it I guess. My father works in Indiana Monday through Thursday, so I usually never know whom exactly I will be staying with during those days. Most of the time it’s my mother, or my recently ex stepmother, which I am very close with. But there is always somewhere, so it is not like I’m homeless or such, it is really just who I feel like talking to for the night.

2.Defiant camaraderie
Roughhouse normalcy
Mutual mutiny

Officially condone sacrilegious influence
Dismally contemptuous burden
Alumni exploit Audacity

Incapacitated Showdown
Nausea Whirlpool
Imbedded Pandemonium

Hypnotized Homeroom
Anticipate brandishing recitation
Hoarse skepticism

Annihilate Superiority!
Taunt Conspiracy!
Suppress influence, ricochet commiseration!

3. I do not know exactly why Jerry did not decide to sell. The only reasoning for such actions I can draw up is that Jerry wanted some originality. Jerry is always misplaced, no matter where he seems to go. He has an extremely awkward relationship with his father, he has problems during the school day with the vigils and such, and even on the football field which he longs for to be his niche; Jerry just doesn’t fit. So when Jerry decided not to sell, he drew attention to himself, saying that that he is his own character, that he isn’t just another roughhouse trinity machine.

Jerry’s everyday life is very strange and tough, he attends an all boys school that is ran by a group pretty much like the mob. His life was made even worse when his mother died at a young age. The Vigils and Brother Leon make his life worse and worse everyday. If I was to compare my life with his I would have to say my life would be much easier and stress free. One thing I have that he longer has is my mother. Going through that age is very tough without your mother. Also in my life I don’t have a teacher that picks on me and a group that rules the school. This is why Jerry’s life is so much different than mine.

I felt nausea whirling in my stomach like a fast whirlpool,
Pondering about distress makes this feeling grow and grow.
It felt like a hand grenade had detonated in my dismal stomach,
This war about chocolate was grotesque.

The reason that I chose these words was because, I read set of words and the poem was just coming to me. Words like nausea, whirling, whirlpool, pondering, dismal, hand grenade and grotesque, were all the words that I used from the site.

The books title mentions a war about chocolate; this war is talking about Jerry and how he refuses to sell chocolates for a class assignment. Jerry’s main reason for not selling the chocolates is to protest basically. He thinks that is crazy to be forced to sell the chocolate so he says “no”. The first day that Brother Leon asks the students to sell chocolate everyone in fear says “yes”; but when he comes to Jerry he refuses. Brother Leon Is stunned and for the next few days asks him over and over again. This starts the war between Jerry, the Vigils, and Brother Leon.

1) There is one prime example of adults bullying people in this story. Brother Leon through out the entire story picks on his students because he simply enjoys it. There are many things wrong with this because, kids are supposed to look up to adults and if a child sees this he/she may start to bully. One adult that is bullied in the story is Brother Eugene; the Vigils assignment “Room 19” was a prank were they basically destroyed everything in his room.

2) The protagonist in the story would have to be Jerry. Jerry is a very depressed boy because of his mother death. He wants to be apart of the football team but has a hard time because of his small size.

3) I think that every school should have school spirit. I think there is a line like arguing with referees over nothing. At Greenup there is obviously not enough school spirit. I think the main reason for that is because no one cares why cheer for a team that you know is going to lose.

4) He is a very good friend of Jerry’s; he also plays football but gets picked on a lot by the Vigils. Although he plays football he seems to be afraid when he gets his first assignment from the Vigils.

5) Paul was humiliated because everyone who he asked to buy chocolates turned him down. Tubs wasn’t really humiliated but his problem was that he had no money. He wanted to buy something for his girl friend and spent all of his money. This caused him to steal money from his father and gt into a lot of trouble.

6) My personal opinion is that the world is full of both. When I think about it everyone has friends but we always talk about our so called friends behind their backs. Even the people that seem to be the nicest people will always in life say something or do something to hurt some ones feelings.

8) Jerry is pretty much protesting when he refuses to not sell the chocolates. He is standing up to the Vigils and Brother Leon. He thinks that it is ridiculous that they are requiring the students to sell so much chocolate.

9) These things can be connected a lot because; mental stress can affect your physical appearance a lot. I know that when I am stressed out about school I have a hard time getting through the day; I feel tired and depressed mostly.

10) I think the teachers should definitely do something about the Vigils. If there were people like this in my school I would almost be terrified because if you receive an assignment you have to do it. This group is controlling the school and the teachers do nothing about it which is ridicules.

11) The other students are also very much afraid of the Vigils. Goober has to be one of the worst because when he received the assignment “Room 19” I thought he was going to pass out. There seems to be no one in the whole school who is willing to stand up to the Vigils.

12) There could be two antagonists in the story one could be Archie head of the Vigils or Brother Leon. Both of these people cause many problems through out the story for Jerry. Archie tries multiple times to get an assignment for Jerry, but his assistant convinces him other wise. Brother Leon of course is the teacher that no one really likes that continuously picks on the students of Trinity.

2nd Set of Questions
March 20, 2009

Pre-Post Questions
1.) The universe that Jerry lives in is just a universe of pure violence and vulgarity. All that occurs in his universe is bullying. This bullying comes through many shapes and sizes, though. In one-way or another every man stands alone. There is nobody anyone can trust about any subject; each individual will betray each when it comes down saving themselves. The universe I live in is a very happy one and to me is perfect. There are times though like in the novel. When it comes down to getting in trouble some people will sell you out to save themselves, but not every time. In this world I have people that I can trust, but I know deep down that I shouldn’t. In the novel trust is impossible and in my universe it is not, for me anyway. Overall, my universe and Jerry’s universe have only one thing in common.
2.) I used the following words in my found/magnetic poem because I thought about how I would feel at Jerry’s school; what thoughts I would have on the other characters, The Vigils, and what my actions would be towards them.

I frantically rushed into the school
Smuggling in my hand grenade deep inside my back pocket
Looking around I see him
That gangster, that bastard

Oh no, I was vulnerable
I had been caught pondering
Exasperated-I was
Confession- I thought

He became fierce
I became wary
Feelings were-uncanny
Here came the taunts and the end of my anticipation

3.) Jerry decided not to sell the chocolates for few reasons. Jerry wanted to be different and wished to be bullied no longer, so he was brave and took a stand by not selling the chocolates. Jerry is like several bully victims, in which eventually they all decide they cannot take it anymore, but can resolve this by many decisions. Jerry’s decision was very courageous because there was no telling what the school and the Vigils would do to him once he refused. By standing up for himself he made it okay not to sell the chocolates and his decision helps others think about making the same one.
1.) There are many examples of adult bullying and adults being bullied in the novel. Brother Leon is an adult bully. He is a very corrupted teacher and taunts his entire student body, especially the weak-minded. By this teacher bullying students it just makes students think that it’s okay to bully, thus having the Vigils and Archie bully Brother Eugene. Eugene is a weak person and is an example of an adult being bullied.
2.) The protagonist of the novel is Jerry. Jerry is the main character of the story and by standing up for himself and having the courage to do what no other man could, he becomes the hero.
3.) Every student should be proud to go to his or her school, but I do not think it should be a requirement to show school spirit. We should have a lot of school spirit if there is a team or teams that are actually good enough to support by pep. We should draw the line when it is possible that any student or person’s health may become endangered. At Greenup County High School we do not have very much school spirit. The student’s here are sort of hypocritical. Everyone wears school colors to school and says that they are coming to the games and cheering, when actually they either don’t come at all or set in the stands talking.
4.) The Goober is a football player for Trinity. He is very tall and lanky. The Vigils targeted him to perform an assignment and this made him very nervous and cautious. This impacts the Goober greatly by lack of sleep and makes him have several thoughts of Brother Eugene. The Goober becomes a victim of the Vigils.
5.) Paul and Tubs have very humiliating experiences selling chocolates. People did want to buy chocolate, but no one would buy anything off of Paul, with Tubs matters were different. Tubs couldn’t sell any and really didn’t want to take the time so he stole money from his father.
6.) I think that the world is made up of victimizers and victims. The world is full of victimizers or people who prey on other people to make themselves feel better. Then there are also victims who are the prey of these predators. Some victims are also victimizers though. By being victims for so long they see that it is okay to do what people do to them, so they become the victimizers.
7.) Archie loves having authority and can show this by telling Brother Jacques what to do. This is why he tells Brother Jacques that he should stay behind those carrying the assignments.
8.) Jerry refuses to sell the chocolates once the assignment is over because he is not yet about to stand down again. He also wants to get back at Brother Leon by letting him know that he may be able to bully other students, but Leon cannot taunt him.
9.) Physical and mental stress are related for many reasons. If you are physically tired than you are gong to have to rest and by resting you are mentally going to sleep as well. If you are mentally sick than you have the will to do nothing, which makes you physically, want to stay in bed all day as well. I have experienced this as I am this very moment. With school and other teenage problems I am mentally exhausted and right now I am in track and cheerleading, which is physically tiring. I believe I would not be so physically tired if I didn’t have to come to school and think all day and that I would not be mentally tired if I wasn’t running all these activities because I am normally a very hyperactive person.
10.)I think that the teachers honestly have no right to do anything about the Vigils. The Vigils have to do with the kids and they should figure these problems out n their own, but when the Vigils start messing with the teachers it becomes available for the teachers to do something about them. If the Vigils were in my school I probably would wan the teachers to do something about it because that is the easy way out, but it would be okay if they didn’t because would grow stronger by trying to fight my way through.
11.) I think that the other students feel fear of the Vigils because they always do what they are told in order to not get into trouble. If the students were not afraid of the Vigils they would stand up to them like Jerry, thus proving fear to be their emotion.
12.) The antagonist is Archie. He always gets his way by making others fear him. He has quite a knack for making up mental and physical ways he can harm others. When Brother Leon asks for Archie’s help, Archie gets lots of control from this and knows he has immunity from getting into trouble by a teacher. Archie is the villain of the story.

The Chocolate War Questions#2
Pre/ Post Reading Questions
1. Jerry has a poster in his locker that reads, "Do I dare disturb the universe?” Describe the universe that Jerry lives in and compare it to your own in a 100-word response.
Answer:
Jerry lives in a very uptight universe. He is always rushing to a football practice or going to school every day. He lives by a routine; he never stops to do things for himself. It’s very much like my own universe. My life is insane. I’m always in a rush to do something. I feel like I never have time for me. Like Jerry I am at school ever day possible. Instead of football though I am rushing to a drill team practice. Everyone tells me that all my rushing will kill me some day. I don’t think so it makes me work harder.
2 Using the following vocabulary guide drawn directly from the novel, create a magnetic/found poem. Describe which words you chose, and why.
Bullying
Distress
Mockery
Conspiracy
Denial
Ravage
Havoc
Trinity High School
I chose the words in this poem to show the atmosphere of Trinity High with The Vigils running the school. I used bullying as my title because that’s how the gang operates. Then I used distress to show how the people feel that get the assignments of the gang. Then I chose mockery, conspiracy, and denial to show how the teachers try to act like the gang doesn’t exist. Then I chose ravage and havoc to show how the gang ravaged the school.
3 Jerry decides not to sell the chocolates, starting the war that is mentioned in the book's title. Describe Jerry's decision and why he chose not to sell them in a 100-word response.
Answer:
Jerry first started to decide not to sell the chocolates because it was a Vigil assignment. Archie made his assignment that he was to refuse the chocolates for ten days. Then after the ten days he was allowed to accept the chocolates. It was that time Jerry decided to refuse the chocolates on his own. He refused them to be able to stick it to Brother Leon. Jerry felt like he was getting a lot of negative attention because of the refusal of the chocolates. He thought that he should refuse it himself so that it was his ideal. While doing this Jerry kind of starts his own way to go against the schools pressures and bullying.
Reading Questions Part 2:
1 Adults Bully as well as children, often producing even more dramatic effects. Describe adult bullying or adults being bullied in the novel.
Answer:
Brother Leon bullies the boys every day in his classroom. He will call them to the front of the class and humiliate them. He will also pick on them when he walks around the room with his pointer. This bullying can really hurt a kids’ self esteem. Adults also get bullied in the novel. The Vigils bullied Brother Eugene. They made all the things in his room fall apart by loosening the screws. The poor teacher looked pathetic when he went to cower behind his desk and even that feel too. That would really diminish Brother Eugene’s authority in his classroom.
2. Describe the protagonist of the novel.
Answer:
The protagonist of the novel is Jerry Renault. He was new to the school and saw how the Vigils treated people and stood up to them. They gave him an assignment not to sell the chocolates and when it was over he just continued not to sell the chocolates. That was his way to stand up to the Vigils. The rest of the school should follow his lead and get rid of the Vigils.

3 How much school spirit should we have? Where should we draw the line? Do we have school spirit at Greenup County High School?
Answer:
We should show a lot of school spirit. That would encourage our sports teams to do a better job. We should draw the line at forcing kids too have school spirit. If they don’t want to participate then they can just do work the whole time. I don’t think that we have enough school spirit here. No one cares enough to do anything about it either. That is the reason in my opinion why our teams do so poorly.
4 Describe Goober.
Answer:
Goober is a very goofy guy. He’s kind of shy and reserved. He’s seen as the class clown. He feels the most comfortable when he’s running. He lets the other kids tell him what to do at school. He is a very easy target for the Vigils.
5 Paul and “ Tubs” have humiliating experiences selling chocolates. Describe them.
Answer:
They had many humiliating experiences. Tubs spent the entire day walking around and couldn’t sell anything. Paul went up to this apartment and a woman answered the door with a baby pulling at her skirt. The place smelt of pure urine and she refused to buy anything from him. That was extremely embarrassing for him.

6 Do you think the world is made up of either victims or victimizers? Explain.
Answer:
I think the world is made up of both victims and victimizers. There are lots of different groups out in the world. There are the people like Archie and The Vigils who think its funny to hurt people. Then there are people like Jerry Renault who stand up against the bullies. There are also people like Goober who the Vigils pick on for a good joke.
7 Why does Archie tell Brother Jacques about the trigger word?

Answer:
Archie told Brother Jacques about the trigger word so the joke would backfire on everyone in the classroom. The joke was that every time he said environment the boys would have to get up and jump around the classroom. At first the kids thought they were in control of the joke. Then Brother Jacques made them do it the whole class period and about wore them out. Archie was outside of their door with a smile on his face as they walked out.
8) Why does Jerry continue to refuse to sell the chocolates after the assignment is over?
Answer:
Jerry continued to sell the chocolates to get back at the Vigils. This was his way to stand up for himself and tell the Vigils that they can’t control him. He was the first one of the high school to stand up against the Vigils. Every one was thinking it was so cool for him to stand up against them. It started to open the kids eyes that the Vigils don’t control them.

9. Jerry feels sick every morning because he has to face Leon. How are physical and mental stress connected, and have you ever experienced them relating to each other?

Answer:
I have experienced it a lot of times. They are connected because if you just keep worrying over something it runs down your body. I experience it when I get really nervous about something. Its ms frequently happened to me on tests. I am a stickler about my grades and e very time a big test comes up I freak out over it.
10. Should the teachers do something about the Vigils? If they were in your school, would you want them to?

Answer:

Teachers should do something about the Vigils. I would defiantly want something done about them. With the Vigils out of the way Trinity High could be ran the correct way. It would also make the kids feel safer. Trinity High would be a better place to go to school.
11. How do the other students in the school feel about the Vigils? Describe their reactions.
Answer:
They are afraid of the Vigils in a sense. Some also want to be a Vigil member some day. They respect them. Basically it’s a gang running a high school how they see fit. No one would ever stand up to a Vigil. Its’ kind of like they own the school.
12. Describe the antagonist of the novel.

Answer:
The antagonist of the novel was Archie. He was always making up assignments for people to make them do. His assignments were always there to annoy the teachers and students of the school. He always was thinking of was to hurt people. He really needed to find some one that would teach him a lesson.

PRE/POST READING QUESTIONS

1. Jerry has a poster in his locker that reads, "Do I dare disturb the universe?". Describe the universe that Jerry lives in and compare it to your own in a 100-word response.
Jerry lives in his own little world. The poster he doesn’t really “know what it means but it moved him mysteriously.” Jerry likes to please people and stay out of trouble, until the chocolate sell. He does things on his own and thinks about everything. He seems like a quiet kid, who is always to himself. His world is kind of like mine. I keep to myself, I’m quiet, but I do speak my mind. I think he has a longing to be noticed by people. He wants to be different and he’s acting out about the chocolate sell. He feels like “a lone survivors in a world full of strangers” I feel like that all the time.

2. Using the following vocabulary guide drawn directly from the novel, create a magnetic/found poem. Describe which words you chose, and why.

http://www.vocabulary.com/VUctchocolatewars.html

Magnetic/found poetry: That sarcastic smirk dazzled me. I winced, while craving a ridiculous showdown. A mimicked confession, officially mockery beckoned dismissal.

I chose these words because they sounded good together. I don’t really know why I chose them actually. They just sounded like they could go together and make a good poem.

3. Jerry decides not to sell the chocolates, starting the war that is mentioned in the book's title. Describe Jerry's decision and why he chose not to sell them in a 100-word response.
Jerry is given an assignment by Archie, the assigner of the vigils. The assignment is that Jerry must refuse to sell the chocolates for 10 days. He chose not to sell the chocolates in the beginning of it because he was forced too. When the assignment was over Jerry still wouldn’t sell the chocolates. He told Goober that it wasn’t for the vigils anymore its was for himself. I think that the reason he doesn’t want to sell the chocolates now because he was admired for it or he was think about what the man said at the bus stop. That he was missing out on life and not selling the chocolates wasn’t anything big.

READING QUESTIONS PART 2:

1. Adults bully as well as children, often producing even more dramatic effects. Describe adult bullying or adults being bullied in the novel.
The teachers are bullied in this novel too. The vigils cause the teachers trouble. They also have a student break into a classroom and loosen the screws to everything.

2. Describe the protagonist of the novel.
The protagonist would be Jerry and Goober. Jerry is the main charter and is in a dispute. He goes against the chocolate sell and doesn’t sell the chocolates. He doesn’t try to start conflicts. Goober is a protagonist because he doesn’t start conflicts. He tries to stay away from trouble.

3. How much school spirit should we have? Where should we draw the line? Do we have school spirit at Greenup County High School?
We should have a lot of school spirit. We should draw the line at going overboard and hurting other schools. No we don’t really have a lot of school spirit here at GCHS. We have some but not as much as we should.

4. Describe the Goober.
The Goober is a guy who likes to please everybody. He wants everyone to be happy even if he doesn’t like it. He tries to talk Jerry into selling the chocolates. He does change after the assignment, he relives it all the time.

5. Paul and “Tubs” have humiliating experiences selling chocolates. Describe them.
Paul’s humiliating experience is a women laughing at him when he tried to sell her chocolate and shutting the door in his face. Paul also hasn’t sold any chocolate. “Tubs” humiliating experience was that he stole money from his father, his bike had a flat tires and he had to carry around the chocolate boxes. He was also overweight.

7. Do you think the world is made up of either victims or victimizers? Explain.
I think the world is made up of both victims and victimizers. Everyone is a victim of something at some point in their life. Everyone are also victimizers at one point in their life because the victimize people and make them victims.

8. Why does Archie tell Brother Jacques about the trigger word?
Archie tells Brother Jacques about the trigger word, which was environment, so that he would keep using it and make the class jump and dance every time they heard it.

9. Why does Jerry continue to refuse to sell the chocolates after the assignment is over?
Jerry says he is refusing to sell the chocolates after the assignment is over because he says he is doing it for himself.

10. Jerry feels sick every morning because he has to face Leon. How are physical and mental stress connected, and have you ever experienced them relating to each other?
Physical and mental stress are connected because when your stressed you can make your self sick. Mental stress could lead to physical because things in your head can make your emotions lead to physical thing like being sick, throwing up, crying, headaches, ect.

12. Should the teachers do something about the Vigils? If they were in your school, would you want them to?
Yes they should but even if they did I think the vigils would either come up with more for them or keep on with it. I would want them to try even though it may not work.

13. How do the other students in the school feel about the Vigils? Describe their reactions.
Some of the students admire the vigils. Some dislike the vigils and some are scared. Kevin Chartier was in line to become a vigil the next year and was talking to Danny about the assignments. The vigils assignment to Jerry made other students want to be like him and not sell the chocolates. Obie hates the vigils, especially Archie. Students talk about how the vigils are in on the deal of Jerry and the chocolates.

14. Describe the antagonist of the novel.
The antagonist of the novel is Archie, The Vigils, and Brother Leon. Archie gives the assignments and causes students trouble. The Vigils enforce the assignments and aggravate the students. They tell them what to do and cause conflict. Brother Leon causes conflict with the chocolate sell. He has a conflict with every student in the school.

1.)Jerry’s universe compared to mine is similar and at the same time it is not even close to the reality I live in. its similar in ways that I go to school Monday- Friday and have normal friends I talk to. Buts it different because here at gchs we don’t have a secret society in the school, and to say that we did I know our teachers would let then get away with the stuff they do without investigating the acts they do. Examples are room 19 and the chocolate sale. That’s how my words differs and are the same as the world jerry lives in.

2.) Venomous smirk squandered wistful burden. I picked these words because the way I have taken Brother Leon to be is a jerk teacher. And the way he even smiles make people dislike him because he has a cocky smirk.

3.)jerry does not sell the candy bars at first because Vigils tell him not to, then after the mission was over for the Vigils he just cant see it in himself to sell them even thought it keeps him up and bothers him really bad he just cant do it. For example jerry tells goober “ Its not the vigils its me”.

Reading questions # 2

1.)Brother Leon bullies student because he puts them on the spot and the vigils bully brother Eugene because they know he is a weaker brother and he is scared to do anything about the disaster in room 19.

2.)Goober is the athlete of the group. Jerry is the kid that takes no crap not even from teachers and is not scared to do so. Brother Leon is just a teacher but it stepping in because the headmaster is out, he is a jerk kind of teacher and loves to call student out to make them look bad when he is mad.

3.)We have very little school because no one cares about the Russell game no more, we don’t dress up or nothing. We should draw the line when student get crazy and do stupid things during the school hour when they know they will get in trouble. On a scale of 1-10 we have probably a 3.

4.)Goober is a Athlete he plays football and he is a friend of jerry and they play football together. He becomes a victim of the Vigils. I think he has an open mind but is scared to say anything to some one an example is the vigils and Brother Leon.

5.)Paul is a kid the feels sorry for people for example he feels sorry for the people the he try’s to sell chocolate to but cant because there kids, another is he is feels sorry for his parents.
Tubs is a kids that is nice and always try’s to impress his girlfriend and he is a pervert in a way because he talks about his girlfriends Brest a lot. And he try’s to buy her a necklace to get to feel them or something more.

6.)No I don’t because anyone can be a victim and the next day be a victimizer because someone is always bigger, better, smarter, etc.

7.)He tells Brother Jacques because he will do anything to cause a problem and if that’s telling as teacher the headup about the Vigils the he will do it.

8.)Jerry still does not sell the chocolate bars because he feels that he don’t have to and he can not stand Brother Leon.

9.)They are connected because when your tired mentally you are weaker physically. From the lose of sleep stress and other things. I have felt it when I play basketball I would have practice till late at night and I was slowly starting to lose the will power to try because I was sleepy, tired, stressed.

10.)The teachers should do something about the Vigils because the are a big problem for the school because the pick on other student and destroy school property. Yes I would because they would only just cause drama and start stuff at school and slow everybody else in school down from learning.

11.)Other students don’t like the Vigils but are scared to say or do anything because they will be tormented by them if they find out they said anything negative about them.

12.)The antagonist in the book is the sell of the chocolate in the book everyone in the school have school spirit and want to be the best seller to get there named noticed and put on the bored that was made.

1.) The world that Jerry lives in is quite simple. He goes on day to day and tries not to disrupt the schedule that he goes by. In this book he is facing a situation where he might have to do just that, he might have to bring more trouble into his life. His world is somewhat like mine in the sense that I like to be left alone to deal with my business. Also that we have other things to worry about then what people would rather us do. This is how our worlds relate some.

2.) One of the main characters, Jerry Renault, chooses not to take part in the school fundraiser by not selling chocolates. His decision to not sell them wasn’t exactly made on his own time. A “secret” society in the school, The Vigils, is an organization that designs and hands out certain assignments for students to execute. Jerry’s assignment, for instance, was to not sell the chocolates in the annual fundraiser. The assignment was only supposed to last for ten days, but when they were up he still refused the chocolates. This is why he didn’t sell the chocolates and the reasoning behind it.

1.) There are a couple examples of adult bullying in the novel, many of them coming from Brother Leon. An example of this is when he is talking to David, the student who usually received very high marks but got an F. He basically suggests that if David can’t get Jerry to sale some chocolates then his grade may not rise to what he usually gets.

2.) The protagonist of the novel is Jerry Renault. He’s the protagonist because he is basically the main character of the story and he is the student who must stand up to Brother Leon. Not only this, but he refuses to sell the chocolates even after his assignment for The Vigils and ended.

3.) Everyone should have some school spirit, whether it be a lot or just a little. The line should be drawn at the point where the person doesn’t want to participate in what is going on anymore. At Greenup County High School, like most other schools, there are many people who have very high school spirit while others do not. However, all in all, I think that as a whole, Greenup has quite a bit of school spirit.

4.) The Goober is a person who is very quiet and reserved. He doesn’t really like to be the center of attention or get into any trouble at school or at home. He is also the student who had to take the vigil assignment of undoing the screws in Brother Eugene’s classroom.

5.) Paul and Tubs both have similar embarrassing experiences while selling the chocolates. While attempting to sell the candies, they get turned away and

6.) No, I don’t think that the world is made up of just victims and victimizers. This is because there are some people who don’t get bullied and they don’t bully people, they just kind of float along through life taking whatever life throws their way.

8.) Archie tells Brother Jacques about the trigger word for one main reason. This was because he wanted the Brother to be able to turn the tables on the students for his own amusement and show them what it feels like to have a prank pulled on them for a change.

9.) Jerry still refuses to sell the chocolates because, basically, he just doesn’t want to, also because he wants to stand up to Leon.

10.) Physical and mental stress are connected because if you get stressed out by something physical, then it causes you to worry. I’ve been in this sort of situation when I cheered (I know it’s hard to believe) and I was supposed to throw a new tumbling pass in a competition. I didn’t think I was physically capable, even though I had been throwing it fine, even on the gym floor, so it caused me a lot of mental stress.

12.) I don’t think the teachers should do anything about the vigils, because they’re only having a laugh. If they were in my school I think I would still feel the same way, since everyone needs to loosen up every now and again.

13.) Some of the other students in the school don’t like the vigils while others do. Some of the students think that they are annoying and out of control while the other set of students think they’re entertaining and want to join the ranks of the Vigils.

14.) The antagonist of the novel is Brother Leon. Because he is pushing and bullying the students into selling chocolates and doing other things that he wants, even if it doesn’t benefit the students.

2nd set of questions

Pre reading Questions
1) The universe that jerry lives in is a hostel one. To be in high school there is so much emphasis on the smallest things. His is very different from mine. My universe is a peaceful one most of the time. I play sports but I don’t deal with gangs or even bullies. At our high school we mostly get along for the most part. I don’t compete over chocolate bars. We might race our four wheelers but the pretty much the extent of in school competion. Even if we did I wouldn’t get this into it even if I did have a lot of pressure on me. I just don’t see the thrill in selling chocolate bars.

2) Hand grenade distress ridiculous contemptuous stench flunky venomous exploit alumni wince ridiculous

These words paint a good picture in my mind. The last word used was “ridiculous”. This is how I feel about the chocolate war. I think it funny how selling chocolate is so intense.

3) Every student should not be required to be an advocate of school spirit. It is a privilege, not a right. Since we are provided schools and are forced to where we go, we should not have to be enthusiastic about our school.

Reading Questions/ Part Two
1) Brother Eugene bullies the adults. Brother Leon bullies the kids.

2) Jerry is the protagonist of the story. He single-handedly takes on the meanest bully in school that everyone is scared of. Jerry isn’t a rat he just takes care of it him self. Jerry is very honorable person.

3) I think that school spirit is very important. I do believe they took it a little too far in this novel. We should be supportive to all of our groups of compition. Here at Greenup County high school I think we could use some help with our school spirit. It’s very hard to get a full crowd at any school event. I think we should all take pride in our school.

4) Goober is a great football player. His realm name is Roland Goubert. Her prefers to go by Goober. I think that Goober is a kind-hearted person who is easy to scare.

6) I think we are all guilty of a little of both. Some people more than other but for the most part we have all been either a bully or the victim. In saying that we are all victims to something or someone.

7) I think that he really jus likes telling people what to do. In this novel I think that everyone is trying to show they can push someone around.

8) Archie tips off Brother Jacques to stay one step ahead of the students carrying out the assignment. He likes to have power and tipping off Brother Jacques is one way he can show this power

11) The other students are also scared of the Vigils. Goober has to be one of the worst because when he received the assignment “Room 19” No one in the whole school wants to stand up to him.

12) Archie Costello is the antagonist of the novel. Over all he is a huge jerk. He punishes his students mentally. Everyone is scared of him so no one wants anything to do with him. He is a jerk to everyone not jus the student. To me he is a over powering, hot head who always have to be in charge. Personally I think that people that are like him are insecure and have to belittle other people to make there self feel big.

1. To me, I can see adult bullying being more common among modern america. I can just picture big corporate offices, and all of the fun that goes on to be the top dog in that setting. Adult bullying would be more intense, for it would usually be more vicious, more full of maliciousness. And losing a fight if you are 35 would probably be more demoralizing than if you were 16.
2. Jerry Renault is the protagonist of The Chocolate War. Jerry is a unique choice of a main character, because he does not possess the average heroic characteristics of normal protagonists. Jerry is very subtle, and doesn't really know how do deal with his problems. He is often bullied and is very out of touch with his place in the world.
3. School spirit is an option or choice. There is nothing wrong with not being supportive of your school, because unlike colleges or universities, you do not really have a choice of what school you go to. Because of this, many students just try to go with the flow until the rides over. There is some school spirit in GCHS, but not nearly as much as other nearby schools in my opinion.
4. The Goober is a very odd character. He is a student at Trinity who is often bullied and victimized. He is very tall and thin, and quite emotionally unstable. After assigned to room nineteen by the Vigils, Goober has been emotionally scarred and is terribly paranoid.
5. Tubs had a laughable experience with selling chocolates. Tubs spent the money that he had earned on his girlfriend, but then had to pilfer money from his father to balance his lost profit. With Paul, a lady could not afford to buy chocolates from him for she had many children, and it sort of embarrassed Paul.
6. There are obviously both. Without victims, there are no victimizers. But victimizers have more fame. No prominent political power is ever seen as a victim, yet every average joe is normally seen as a victim. Sometimes victimizing can even be called for, depending on where you may live.
7. Archie tells Brother Jacques about the trigger word to kind of get ahead of the game. After this, Archie is one step ahead of everyone with assignments.
8. After the assignment was over, I think Jerry had developed a case of Stockholm Syndrome. He didn't want to sell chocolates anymore. He kind of agreed with the Vigils, and wanted to fight the power.
9. Most people face mental stress, with work and school. But if people are very involved with things, they may face physical stress as well. When these two are combined, many people resort to killing themselves, because it is terrible. You're distressed and confused mentally, but you are tired and weak physically. Put them together, and nothing gets done. I experience this every time I have to move from one house to another, and this seems to happen a lot.
10. I personally do not believe that they should do something about the Vigils. If they just do not disturb the Vigils, nothing terribly bad would happen. Because of the Vigils, the students are moderated in a sense, and don't get out of hand.
11. The students are in fear of the vigils. They know that they will have to comply with assignments, but unwillingly. To the students at Trinity, it is a burden to them, because they like the fact that the students have some power because of the Vigils, but noone wants to be picked for an assignment.
12. Archie Costello is the Antagonist of The Chocolate War. Archie is the head of the Vigils, and has the power to keep that position. Archie is very insightful and charismatic, but in a demented sense. He is a strong leader, and knows the ways of the human mind, allowing him to keep a good grip on Jerry.

Blogspot Question 2

-Pre Reading

1. Jerry kind of lives in his own little world. As I answered in a question previously, a man even confronted Jerry on his behavior. The man admitted that Jerry acted older than what he really was. Now, to me I want to live my teenage years as long as I can, growing up can be a very scary thing. I don’t know why anyone would want to grow up. That is just more responsibilities you have to deal with in life, and the faster you wish your days away the unhappier you become. I think that is why Jerry is the way he is. He barely has fun anymore.

2. Simultaneously the bastard swinger should be a crucifix.
He goes in the pitch, trying to have his own little showdown
He was hypnotized into being Zorro, trying to show off his superb evilness.
He falls short, wobbly, and cannot continue on, he falls greatly.
The nerds laugh, they take pictures, and plan to use this as blackmail.
The villain is down, he can no longer be.
The reason I chose these words was because I thought, I would add a few “funny” words together and try and come up with something. The way I meant for this to say was “ Sometimes, the so called awesome bastard is a swinger that needs to be crucifixed.” He is trying to show off how evil he is, but in the end he just gets hurt, and real embarrassed.

3. Jerry was punished by the Vigils, they gave him an assignment and it was to not take the chocolates and sell them. The Vigils put him in a no-win situation. The reason this assignment was given to Jerry was because in chapter 12 during football practice Jerry was constantly getting tackled, so then Jerry steps up his game passes the ball to Goober, Goober catches it, then runs for a touchdown. The coach then congratulates Jerry, and after practice the Vigils put a note on Jerry’s locker.

Reading Questions;

1. At the beginning of the book, one of the assignments given was for the desk to be unscrewed. As all the students sat down in their desk they all collapsed, causing everyone to be knocked down on the ground. This was brother Leon’s class; he would be consisted of adult bullying. He is a mean corrupted teacher. He uses his teaching pointer to pick, stab, jab, or flick other students. He also enjoys picking on the weak as he did to Bailey, one of the smartest kids in the class. Leon Accuses him and cheating and lying and tries to embarrass him in front of the entire class room.
Another thing I would consider bullying is when the football coach is coaching his team he calls them names and says horrible things to them. Even though he is a coach and screaming is the only way to get to them, being mean doesn’t help any.

2. The protagonist of the story is Jerry. So far, in what I have read, jerry has came across as a small, weak, guy. That just kind of wants to fit in and make the football team. But he gets on the Vigils bad side and has to come across an assignment.

3. Our school is pretty school spirited, at times. I really wish it could show a lot more, maybe outside of school. Students here at Greenup are very fun to be around during homecoming time. We have games and fun stuff that we love to compete in. The homecoming football game is always a big thing for us students. We always show up and support our team. Now, as for other games; the bleachers aren’t to hot and crowded with students, mainly just older people that mourn about how they miss the old days. I wish more students (thugs) could participate in school activities and not always talk smack about the school. Low school spirit is what gives Greenup a bad name.

4. The goober was Jerry’s only friend. He was a tall and skinny football player for Trinity. The vigils target goober as one of their first victims. He ends up being one of the enemies.

5. Paul and Tubs have very bad experiences selling chocolates. The people did want to buy the chocolate they were selling, but no one would buy anything off of Paul. But Tubs story was different. Tubs couldn’t sell any because he didn’t want to take his time, so he stole the money from his father.

6. I think that the world is made up of victimizers and victims. The world is full of victimizers or people who enjoy terrorizing other people to make them feel better about themselves. Then there are also victims who are the people that get picked on. Even though, victims can also victimizers too. They learn from the way they are treated. Just like the saying goes, “treat people the way you want to be treated.”

7. Archie loves having authority. He shows us by always telling Brother Jacques what to do. This is why he tells Brother Jacques that he should stay behind those carrying the assignments.

8. Jerry refuses to sell the chocolates once the assignment is over because he is not yet about to stand down again to the Vigils. He also wants to get revenge on Brother Leon by letting him know that he may be able to bully other students, but Leon will not taunt him anymore.

9. Physical and mental stress is related for many reasons. If you are physically tired, which is caused from working to hard, and making your body actually do stuff, then you are gong to have to get some rest and by resting you are mentally going to sleep as well, which will relax your mind and muscles. If you are mentally sick than you have the will to do nothing, and at this point, your body feels real heavy and you don’t even want to lift a finger. I have experienced this plenty of times, with school, “girl” problems I am mentally exhausted and with sports I am running in track, which I sprint and I’m also a cheerleader, which is REALLY physically tiring. I wake up in the morning, go straight to school, use my brain to do my work then after school I go straight out to the track field and run for 2 hours. When track is done with I get something small to eat, then off to tumbling I go for another hour and 30 minutes, not making it home until 10.

10. Today, in school, we do have something similar to the Vigils. The “vigils’ in our school just aren’t as bad as the Vigils in the book, but if they were I would highly recommend the teachers doing something about it. It’s ridiculous the way they make innocent students do stuff they don’t want to do.

11. To me, the other students feel fear of the Vigils. Only because they force people to do horrible things, and if they are not done then they are punished.
The students will not stand up to the Vigils, which also gives me he impression that they are scared of them.

12. The antagonist is Archie. Archie is always getting his way. He makes others fear him. He really enjoys coming up with mental and physical ways to harm the other kids. In the book, Brother Leon asks Archie for his help, Archie a lot of attention and he knows he can’t get into any trouble by a teacher. Archie is the bad guy/villain of the story.

Pre/Post Reading Questions
1.) In Jerry’s life, he didn’t really stand out much. He was just another student at school and nothing special. The poster in his locker read, “Do I dare disturb the universe?” Throughout the book, he begins to do the complete opposite of what everyone else is doing. He decides not to sell the chocolates, which every other kid must do. He basically refuses to do anything and everything asked of him. He disturbs the way things are at Trinity High School. Every other year, all the students sell the chocolates, end of story. But Jerry does something no one else has ever done and decided not to sell the chocolates.
2.)
3.) Jerry’s decision was to not sell the chocolates even after his assignment with The Vigils was over. He chose to do this because he wants to break the tradition at the school with selling the chocolates. He doesn’t like selling the chocolates and wouldn’t want to sell them every year following the current year. If he doesn’t sell the chocolates then other kids will possibly quit selling them and the tradition will be completely broken. The plan backfires and the other students don’t refuse to sell the chocolates, but he still tried.

Reading Questions Part 2
1.) There is plenty of bullying in this book. Brother Eugene is being bullied because they go into his classroom and loosen every screw to make him mad. He knows that Brother Eugene will be really emotional about it.
2.) The protagonist of the novel would be Jerry Renault. He is going through a period in which he wants to make a difference and change the routine in his life. He refuses to sell the chocolates because everyone else is selling them.
3.) I think we should have tons of school spirit. Students complain about how boring school is and that is because we don’t have enough school spirit. If we had more then students would have more fun at school. I personally don’t think there is a certain place to draw the line on school spirit. You can never have too much spirit for your school.
4.) The Goober is Jerry’s only real friend in the book. He is a person who loves running and runs even past the point where it hurts. He is very tall and skinny. He also plays football with Jerry.
5.) Paul’s humiliating story was that everyone he asked to buy chocolates turned him down. Tubs didn’t really have a humiliating experience but he didn’t have enough money to buy his girlfriend something. He was planning on using his chocolate money to buy the gift.
6.) I think the world is made up of both victims and victimizers. In my opinion, there are more victimizers. For example, over 70 percent of our school is picking on the other 30 percent. A lot of people have really low self esteem which cause them to pick on other kids.
7.) Archie tells Brother Jacques about the trigger word because every time he used the word the students had to jump up and down from their chairs. He told him the word so that Brother Jacques would use the word as much as possible.
8.) Jerry still continues to refuse the chocolates because he is trying to break the tradition at Trinity. He doesn’t want to have to sell the chocolates every year and if he doesn’t, more people will decide not to sell, and the tradition could possibly be broken.
9.) When Jerry has to face Leon every morning, he gets very stressed out. Physical and mental stress are related because when you are mentally stressed out, you sometimes begin to quit doing some of the things you used to do. Mental stress can also affect your appearance. For example, when I am really stressed I don’t spend much time getting ready when I go places.
10.) I think the teachers should do something about The Vigils. If they were in my school, yes I would want them to. The Vigils give the students assignments that they really don’t want to do but are forced to.
11.) The students feel intimidated by The Vigils. They will do anything that is asked by The Vigils.
12.) Archie Costello is the antagonist of Chocolate War. He can get away with anything he wants. He is the person who told Jerry to refuse to sell the chocolates and got mad when he continued with refusing to sell them even after the assignment was over. He is the person who causes the problems for the antagonist, which is Jerry.

Reading Questions #2

1. The universe that Jerry lives in is very similar to the universe of my own. Jerry lives in such a universe that is surrounded by bullies, school events, and nothing but high school drama. His life is full of worries that concern high school drama and teenage things. In my life, high school is a big part. Jerry is a person that I would consider a more “stand-back” person. He doesn’t like to be the center of attention and he gets nervous when it comes to being noticed. Yes, he does exclude himself from the chocolate sale, which makes him be the talk of the whole entire school. But this, I feel, was not to just get attention. I feel this was something more personal than that, something that was stopping him inside. My universe is much the same in this way.
2. His brilliance could never be overtaken
And his poise was fierce
Was he a ruler with mass authority?
Or was he only a phony bully?
Nothing could stop him from doing his “job”
And no one would face him with such confidence
Will we let him have his way?
Or can we confront this problem,
And make it go away.

I chose words such as brilliance, poise, phony, and confront because all of these words, to me, can describe a bully such as Archie. With all of his assignments and punishments for the other Trinity students, he excludes violence. This may allow people to think it is all right, but indeed it is not. This may be the worst punishment of all, psychological punishment. My poem asks, should we let this problem go so far that people are mentally being punished. I think the teachers and staff of Trinity should somehow put a stop to the Vigils and what they are doing to the school.

3. Jerry continues to refuse the sell of the chocolate bars. Some people believe that this is because of a Vigils assignment, but it is more than that. The refusal has gone beyond the Vigils assignment and is now out of Jerry’s own will to refuse them. This is a personal issue and nothing more than that. Jerry doesn’t have the drive or as much school spirit as the other students to continue selling the chocolates. He will not accept them at all and he has to face the roll call in homeroom every single morning. This is torture for Jerry. Not only does this affect Jerry at school and while he is with his friends, but it also affects him while he is home, even by himself. He cant sleep and anymore he cannot even think straight.

READING QUESTIONS PART #2

1. In life, bullying does not only happen among children. It can also happen among adults as well, creating more of a problem and affect on people in general. In the novel, Brother Leon seems to be a bully. Being a teacher at Trinity High school and an adult, he should not have this quality, but he does. He bullies his students in class by being so unpredictable and cruel. He has shown this in the way he treated Gregory Bailey. He physically bullied him by slapping him across the face with his pointer. Even though this was intentional, it was not done because of something Bailey done wrong, it was to teach the other students how to stand up for your friends. To me, this is a very bad way of teaching it. Brother Leon bullied Bailey in another way mentally by telling him that he cheated, and accusing him knowing that Bailey did nothing wrong at all.
2. The protagonist of this novel is Jerry. Even though he started the idea of refusing the chocolates, he stands up for what he wants and what he believes. He does not want to be bullied and he is against everything the Vigils are about. Jerry is the good guy of the novel.
3. School spirit can be taken too far but it is vital part of what a high school is made of. School spirit should be included and there needs to be a lot of it too. The line can be drawn when school spirit affects the work in high school itself. When the school spirit is gone so far to interrupt the teaching or classes of a high school where no benefit is encountered, that is where the line needs to be drawn. I do believe that we have school spirit in GCHS, but there always room for more school spirit. Not every single student in GCHS has the right amount of school spirit and that is where improvement is needed.
4. The Goober seems to be a really nervous person with low self-esteem. He does the Vigils assignment and unscrews everything in Room Nineteen, instead of standing up for himself. He backs out of everything because he feels so guilty, but he won’t do anything about it and take a stand. He loves to run but he lets everyone walk all over him, especially the Vigils.
5. Paul and Tubs seem to be having a terrible time selling the chocolates. It was mostly humiliating for them as they went up to almost every single house and asked for support, but all they received was rejection. Tubs wanted to make more money because he wanted to use it to purchase his girlfriend a bracelet for her birthday. He ended up having to “steal” money off of his father even though he promised to put it back later. This was humiliating for Paul and Tubs to have to go through so much trouble and still not be able to sell all of their chocolates. It proved them to be lousy salesmen.
6. The world is full of all kinds of different people. Some are out to start trouble or to pick on others, and a minority is the people who get picked on or in other words are the victims in most situations. I think that the world is full of mostly victimizers. Look at how many criminals there are out in this world, who get caught everyday and are sent to prison. On top of that look at how many criminals there are out there that DON’T get caught at all. To me, this proves that there are more victimizers than there are victims in the world.
7. The class is playing a prank on Brother Jacques. Archie tells everyone to stand up and go crazy every time the teacher says the word environment; this is the “trigger” word. Brother Jacques figures out the little trick because Archie told him, so that the class is the ones looking like fools.
8. Jerry feels that it is a free country and that is he doesn’t want to sell the chocolates he shouldn’t have to. The assignment is over but Jerry continues to say “no” every single day in homeroom roll call. Jerry says that it is a personal thing and he doesn’t feel that he should have to sell them
9. Jerry feels sick each morning before facing Leon. This is because there seems to be a connection between Jerry’s mental and physical stress. When someone gets nervous, scared, sad, or angry, it often shows in them physically as well. Your stomach may start hurting, or you may have a headache, and you may feel anxiety or nerves kicking in. I have felt this too. When I get nervous about something my stomach starts turning and I feel butterflies rushing into it. I always feel like I can throw up. When I am angry I always get a bad headache, and start feeling bad.
10. Yes, I think that the teachers should definitely take a stand and do something about the Vigils. I feel that it is absolutely ridiculous that they are getting by with this bullying in the school. Not only are they just getting by with it but also the school is supporting them as well, because Brother Leon included them in the chocolate sale. This shows support from the school just because the teachers will not do anything about the Vigils. If I were in that school where the Vigils thought they “ruled” it would make me very angry to see them get by with it and not even get in trouble for picking on other students.
11. The other students in the school feel scared f the Vigils and always try to avoid them. Every student in the school knows who they are, and is so scared of them. They all feel that the Vigils have power over them and can bully them around whenever and however they want.
12. The antagonist of the novel is Archie. He is the “bad guy” or the one who wants to start trouble. Instead of leaving people alone he likes to pick on people and mess with their minds. He knows that people are scared of him and the Vigils and he knows that people will complete any tasks given to them by the Vigils. There is no doubt that he is the bad guy and is the one in the novel who is always in the middle of trouble.

PRE/POST READING QUESTIONS
1. Jerry lives in a universe that is ruled by The Vigils. The teachers accept The Vigils by ignoring them, and the students always do as they are told. Jerry’s mother recently died, and ever since, his father has just been walking around like a ghost. He lives a boring life with nothing to live for. Jerry realizes that he doesn’t want to live like this anymore and decides to “disturb the universe.” My universe is similar to this. My family seems to act the same way, going day to day working and missing out on the great things in life.

2. He looked away from those venomous eyes.
Loneliness hugged him
Admiration brought him friends, then took them away.
Staggering, he searched for a reason
He found the X, lying on his poker face,
at that moment, it disappeared.

Each word I chose describes a character in the book. The students describe Brother Leon’s personality as venomous. Admiration describes the students at Trinity. They are constantly admiring and following someone. At first they admired Jerry, then they went against him when they started following The Vigils again. Archie is really good at hiding his emotions, so I chose the word poker face. And near the end of the novel, Jerry’s thoughts began staggering, because he didn’t know if not selling the chocolates was the right thing to do.

3. Jerry was given an assignment from The Vigils to refuse to sell the chocolates for ten days. After the ten days he was supposed to accept them and sell his share. Jerry listened to The Vigils because that’s what everyone else did. No body dared to go against them because they were afraid of what would happen. After his ten days, Jerry still refused. This was going against The Vigils orders, which startled the whole school.

READING QUESTIONS PART 2:
1. In The Chocolate War, adults at Trinity bully and get bullied by the students. The students are all afraid of Brother Leon. He is very intimidating and tends to pick on the students during class. Sometimes the students even pick on the teachers, like when Goober was assigned to loosen all of the screws on the furniture in Brother Eugene’s classroom.

2. The protagonist of the novel is Jerry Renault, a freshman at Trinity. He refuses to sell the chocolates for the school, causing drama that affects the entire school. Brother Leon gets angry with him and students look up to him.

3. I think there is a descent amount of school spirit displayed here at GCHS. There could be more, especially when it comes to sports, as not many students go to watch games. People should have some pride in their school, but there is such a thing as having too much school spirit. When violence is displayed, like in the book, a line is crossed.

4. Goober is pretty much Jerry’s only friend. Goober loves to run, which is why he played football for Trinity. He ends up quitting the team because he said that there was something evil happening at Trinity. He said, “I’m not giving anything more to Trinity. Not football, not running, not anything.”

5. It was very important for Tubs to sell chocolate. He had to run around the neighborhood carrying boxes of chocolates because he was trying to raise the money for his girlfriend’s birthday present. Paul also had a humiliating time selling chocolates. A mother answered the door and laughed at him for selling the chocolates and shut the door in his face. This made Paul think about life and how many people have nothing in their live to look forward to.

7. I think the world is made up of both victims and victimizers. The Chocolate War has both kinds of people. Archie is one of the victimizers. He’s manipulative and power hungry. Jerry was one of the victims. Although he refused to sell the chocolates by his own will, others harassed him for it.

8. The students thought that the “environment” joke would be on the teacher. However, Archie hinted to Brother Jacques about the trigger word, turning it around. Brother Jacques began messing with the students, making the joke on them.

9. At first, Jerry didn’t understand why he wouldn’t sell them. Then he started really thinking about it and it was because he wanted things to change. He was tired of doing what everyone else wanted. He wanted to live life his way. Other students started looking up to him because no one had ever thought of just saying no.

10. I have experienced mental and physical stress relating to each other. Last year when I played softball, I dreaded conditioning. I am definitely not a long distance runner. So I would be nervous all day and right before practice I would get very sick to my stomach because I didn’t want to have to run so much. When you are so scared and thinking so negatively, it is going to have a toll on your body.

12. I think the teachers should just leave The Vigils alone. No matter what they did, the will always be a group of students wanting power and doing whatever they can to get it. If they were in my school, of course I wouldn’t want them there. But even if they left, somebody else would just take their place and the teachers could stop it without punishing everyone.

13. The students at Trinity respect The Vigils. They know to never disagree with them because The Vigils will either make their life worse or result to violence. The students are afraid of The Vigils, but at the same time, they look up to them. In The Chocolate War, whenever they started selling chocolates, the whole school followed them.

14. The antagonist in The Chocolate War is Archie Castello. He is a member of The Vigils whose job is to give Assignments to other students. Archie is very good at manipulating people into doing what he wants. He has a lot of influence at Trinity which is shown when he gets the whole school to sell their share of chocolates.

PRE/POST READING QUESTIONS

1. Jerry has a poster in his locker that reads, "Do I dare disturb the universe?". Describe the universe that Jerry lives in and compare it to your own in a 100-word response.
Jerry’s universe and mine are mostly different although having some similarities. As we know Jerry attends an all boy school, which is silently terrorized by “The Vigils”. Although in my school we are Co-Ed, I would defiantly say that we have a few students that do their fair share of terrorizing. Jerry lives a very much planned life as you may say, he goes to school, goes to practice and then returns home all to do it again the next day. With that part I can relate with him, sometimes I feel like life just gets so monotonous, I wake up go to school, come home and do work, go to sleep, and wake up and start the vicious cycle again; Leaving small amounts or no time for myself. Jerry’s life is also very bullied and pushed. He is bullied into many things and pushed to the limit; all of this is things that each student must face sometime in life.

2. Using the following vocabulary guide drawn directly from the novel, create a magnetic/found poem. Describe which words you chose, and why.

I chose to incorporate these words into my poem because it let me feel the emotions that the boys at trinity might be feeling. This freshman who always seems vulnerable is standing up to Brother Leon and refusing the chocolates time after time. This poem expresses what the other boys thought about him.

With that sarcastic smirk he whirled in
Ridiculous I thought, he’s nuts
I considered him lousy and vulnerable
But when confronted he was vicious

3. Jerry decides not to sell the chocolates, starting the war that is mentioned in the book's title. Describe Jerry's decision and why he chose not to sell them in a 100-word response.

Jerry decides not to take part in the selling of chocolates like the rest of the trinity boys at first. Jerry’s decision was based on the task that the vigils had given him; the task was to decline the boxes of chocolate for the first 10 days when asked to help sell. After the ten day period and the vigils assignment was over Jerry declining the chocolates became more than a stupid assignment. He continues to not sell chocolates to prove that you could beat the odds and stand up to your bullies. He decided to stand up against “The Vigils” at Trinity, and give the other boys the realization that they too could stand up for themselves.

READING QUESTIONS PART 2:

1. Adults bully as well as children, often producing even more dramatic effects. Describe adult bullying or adults being bullied in the novel.

In the novel bullying is one of the greatest problems I have noticed. Not only are their students being bullied by the teachers, but there are teachers being bullied by the students. Brother Leon bullied many or most of his students just for the pure fact that he enjoyed it. As I said even teachers got bullied such as Brother Eugene. The Vigils made the assignment “room 19” which completely destroyed Brother Eugene’s room and self esteem.

2. Describe the protagonist of the novel.

The protagonist of this novel would most defiantly be Jerry. Jerry takes lead of his surroundings and does what no student or teacher has done before which is standing up to the vigils. Jerry’s outstanding action makes him the hero of this novel.

3. How much school spirit should we have? Where should we draw the line? Do we have school spirit at Greenup County High School?

We should have an outlandish amount of school spirit, why shouldn’t we be proud for the school we attend. I do think that some schools, mostly in movies go overboard with school spirit by pulling pranks like stealing the other team’s mascot. At Greenup County just as you will find with any school there are some students with great pride and spirit and some students who could care less, why can’t we find a common ground.

4. Describe the Goober.

Goober is a student at Trinity that has also been struck with bullying. Before the incident of room 19 which left him disturbed, he played football. After room nineteen he had reoccurring thoughts about Brother Eugene and started losing sleep over it.

5. Paul and “Tubs” have humiliating experiences selling chocolates. Describe them.

Tubs was forced to use the chocolate money he had to buy his girlfriend a birthday present. After that money was spent he had to steal money off of his farther to balance out the debt. Paul was left standing with the door closed in his face after asking a mother with her hands full of children to purchase chocolates, obviously she declined this sale.

6. Do you think the world is made up of either victims or victimizers? Explain.

The world is made up of both victims and victimizers. For there to be victims there must be someone to victimize them. Also vice versa for there to be victimizers they must have victims to prey upon.

7. Why does Archie tell Brother Jacques about the trigger word?

Archie tells Brother Jacques about the trigger world “Environment”. Archie does this because he strives for power and doing this was one way to prove his power to not only the students but to Brother Jacques too.

8. Why does Jerry continue to refuse to sell the chocolates after the assignment is over?

Jerry refuses to sell chocolates even after the assignment was void. Jerry does this to show that the vigils no longer have power over him, and he was taking control of his life. He showed that you can stand up for yourself even though you may feel pressured.

9. Jerry feels sick every morning because he has to face Leon. How are physical and mental stress connected, and have you ever experienced them relating to each other?

Mental stress can cause many different illnesses. Mental stress can be tied to physical pain. I find it when I am stressed about a “large” assignment that I feel sluggish throughout the day not alert like I would be when I am stress and assignment free.

10. Should the teachers do something about the Vigils? If they were in your school, would you want them to?

The teachers should put a stop to the vigils. I believe that the reason that they do not take action at them is because they fear them too. If the vigils were in my school, I would want them to be punished and have to discard the “group”.

11. How do the other students in the school feel about the Vigils? Describe their reactions.
The other students in the school are very afraid of the vigils also. To me goober would be the most scared from the vigils assignment. Room nineteen completely destroyed him, the other students were afraid that goober could easily become them.

12. Describe the antagonist of the novel.

There are many people in this novel that have the characteristics of the antagonist. One for instance would be Archie; he scares people into doing whatever he wants. Also I would consider Brother Leon one; he uses his authority as a teacher to torture the students without them having the courage to do anything back.

1] Jerry’s universe consists of a variety of people, issues, and dilemmas. The people surrounding him are for the most part crude, selfish and arrogant. Brother Leon expresses each of these characteristics, as does Archie. But aside from the airheads, Jerry is involved with a few persons who are quiet, easy-going, care about the welfare of others, and possess certain innocence. Jerry’s universe that he lives in reminds me much of my own.
There are people who I don’t want to cross paths with. In other words, they undeniably intimidate me. Then, there are the people who constantly get walked over and are said to have no backbone. Unwillingly and unknowingly, I take advantage of these people. Jerry does much the same. I envy Jerry for continuing to not sell the chocolates. Though he was unsure what he was doing, Brother Leon and The Vigils were being gradually beaten down. There are group, students, and teachers at my school that need to be knocked off their high-horse much like what happened in The Chocolate War. I also think that is why this book is read so much, it conveys a realistic setting and “universe”.

2] My body hit the ground; insides exploding like a hand grenade.
Nausea. Gravel forever forced into my sides.
My body in a grotesque fashion. That bastard.
A lousy act, but admiration from within.
Baffled. Confused. He did it.

3] Jerry did not sell the chocolates for ten days as an act of The Vigils. Archie knew how important the chocolate sell was to Brother Leon and how, though it was voluntary, every student at Trinity proceeded to accept and sell the chocolates. Archie thought it would be hilarious if one, unexpected freshman randomly decided he was not going to participate in the annual chocolate sell.
During football practice one evening, Jerry took a terrible blow from one of his teammates, which was witnessed by Archie and Obie, his companion. After researching Jerry Renault in his book, Archie decided Jerry was due for an assignment. That is why Renault did not sell the chocolates.

1] Often it is said to respect your elders, but we all know that kids don’t always follow the rules. That is proven in The Chocolate War when Archie and the Vigils assign The Goob to deconstruct every desk and chair in Brother Eugene’s room. The disaster that arose from the happening caused Brother Eugene to not only shed tears, but also discontinue teaching at Trinity.
Adults are supposed to act like adults right? They’re expected to set examples for children, teach differences between right and wrong, and ultimately enforce the golden rule. But what we expect is not always what we get. Brother Leon is a huge exception to each of those tactics. He intimidates students, embarrasses them, and tortures them mentally. Brother Leon is the definition of adult bullying.

2] Based on what I have read so far of The Chocolate War, Jerry Renault seems to be the protagonist of the novel. He begins as nothing but a mere shadow of his father. Jerry’s life was a constant routine that consisted of school, football and sleeping. Jerry’s attitude soon changed though, surprisingly with the help of The Vigils.
Once the assignment with The Vigils was completed, Jerry was expected to begin selling the chocolates along with every other student at Trinity. When Jerry, day after day, refused to sell the chocolates, Brother Leon and his fellow classmates were bewildered. Soon enough, Jerry became looked upon as a hero, a trendsetter. He defied not only the unbeatable Vigils, but also the manipulating Brother Leon.

3] School spirit is needed to keep athletics and ultimately schools running. It is always good to help out your school’s money situation, teams and clubs. Whether it is fundraising, simply supporting and attending events, or promoting the school, school spirit is needed in every district. We have much school spirit at Greenup County, and we love our sports. Sadly though, I think we lack spirit in the academics category.
As shown in The Chocolate War, the “school spirit” ordeal definitely can be taken too far. Brother Leon insists that to have school spirit, each and every student much sell the required amount of chocolates. Though the fundraising was dreaded in the past, selling 25 boxes of chocolates was not so much a death sentence. Contrary to that, Brother Leon’s new and increased amount of 50 boxes was ridiculous. When Brian Cochran overheard a conversation of his, it revealed the seriousness of the sale. Listening carefully, Brian heard that Brother Leon had “overextended the school’s finances” and “abused his power of attorney”. Brother Leon also stated that he had paid 20,000 dollars in advance for the chocolates. That is where school spirit needs to be controlled.

4] Goober is a tall, lanky fellow who likes to keep to him self. His real name is Roland Goubert, but received the name “The Goob” from his goofy appearance. Roland despises conflict and insists on not being involved in it. His assignment was to unscrew all screws in Brother Eugene’s room. While performing he task, The Goob began to cry, which expressed his true soft-heartedness. Roland allows things to get to him easily, causing him much stress. He relieves this stress by running, in which he transforms from a nerdy, oversized freshman into a beautiful Olympic-like athlete.

5] Tubs participated in the selling of the chocolates, but not at all for his school spirit or respect for Trinity, but for his beautiful girlfriend. Her birthday was coming up soon and she wanted a bracelet she had saw in the window of a store. The price was roughly twenty dollars, which was much more than Tubs Casper owned. He sold he chocolates to earn enough money to buy his girlfriend the present. Tubs pedaled around town on his broken down bicycle scurrying from house to house with nothing but the bracelet. His overweight figure and lack of money was sadly embarrassing.
Paul lived in tragic conditions and used any excuse he could to leave his house. Selling chocolates was perfect. Though he enjoyed not staying home, the apartments he was hitting up smelled of pee and were disgusting. Paul had only sold one box of chocolates and was having horrible luck. His parents and the chocolate sell was getting the best of him.

6] In a way I guess you could say the world holds two types of people; victims and victimizers. There are definitely two distinct personalities that people choose from. Either they are very dominant, control the conversation, make others feel small (whether they know it or not), loudest, and receive the most attention; or they are the quiet type, who struggle to hold more than a thirty second conversation, let people run over them, don’t stand up for themselves, and are not noticed. Some people may say they are a mix between the two, others may not even realize they possess these certain characteristics that would place them as either victims or victimizers. Either way, yes there are people who put others down and there are the people who get put down.

7] Archie told The Vigils he was done with hearing the word ‘environment’ stating, “I’m getting sick and tired of this environment crap- and at least we’ll have one teacher in the frigging school who’ll cross it off his vocabulary list.” While the assignment, which was to jump up and down with every use of the word ‘environment’, Obie realized that Brother Jacques had said the word more than five times in fifteen minutes. The boys who continued to jump when the ‘trigger’ was pulled were utterly worn out. Obie noticed that the teacher had smirk on his face and knew instantly that Archie had let him in on the joke. Archie received happiness when tricked someone, was smarter than him or her, or performed a task they were too naive to understand. That was the case here. Archie had told The Vigils that the joke was on Brother Jacques, but in his demented mind, Archie planned the joke to really be on the boys carrying out the assignment. Watching them wear out brought him great joy.

8] Jerry does not openly express why he didn’t sell the chocolates or why he continues to not sell them. But by comparing other incidents that have occurred in the novel to this one, you can draw a pretty good idea of why Jerry did not accept Brother Leon’s chocolates.
As Jerry was standing at the bus stop one day, a boy he did not know repeatedly exclaimed that Jerry was missing out on a lot in the world. Later, Jerry watched his father sleep, and watched him mope around the house, speaking as little as possible. Jerry told himself that his father was already dead. Living, breathing, yes: but dead in the sense that his life held no excitement or surprise; it was merely a routine of working and sleeping. Though Jerry loved his father, he didn’t want to live like that. That is why Jerry didn’t accept the chocolates. He wanted a change in routine, to make a difference, to be somebody.

9] In my experiences as a teenager, stress seems to be a never-leaving companion. Not only does it take a toll on you mentally, but physically too. I can definitely relate to the way Jerry feels when he wakes up every morning: dreading what the day will bring. When you are stressed out about something, you think about it constantly; planning what to do, worrying it wont work out, hating that the issue is even there. It’s very tiresome and consumes much energy.

10] The Vigils are amusing to an extent. Their assignments begin to get out of hand when Brother Eugene’s room is completely destroyed, causing him to be an emotional wreck and leave Trinity. I can understand that The Vigils kept other bullies in line; along with the suck-ups, the slackers and the kids who just flat out needed a reality check. Contrary to that, The Vigils were getting out of hand by making a teacher leave and causing students to be severely hurt and/or beaten. The teachers at Trinity definitely should have broken up the group. If an organization such as The Vigils were at my school, I would conduct a group of victims to complain to the board, thus exterminating the group.

11] There is an amount of respect that is given to The Vigils. Their ability to defy the physical bullies and control every student at Trinity is morally wrong, but amazing at the same time. Either the students show much respect for the organization, or they are scared speechless of them. Many of the kids that were chosen for assignments dreaded the day Archie Costello, The Assigner, spoke to them in the old room by the gym. Anywhere else, it would be cool to be spoken to by Archie. But that room meant business, business that most kids were trying to steer clear of. These kids were called “Vigil Bait”. Goober for instance looked as if he was born to be given an assignment by Archie. During the meeting that The Goob was being assigned to devour Brother Eugene’s room, “his Adam’s apple was doing a dance in that long, thing neck.” The Goob was utterly frightened. He couldn’t move, protest the assignment, he couldn’t even think correctly. The Vigils had laid down the law and there was nothing he, or anyone else could do about it.
All other victims reacted this way too. They went in, knowing an assignment was to be given to them, and left with their self-esteem at an all time low. Never was there a protest or plead to be left alone, the assignments were irrevocable.

12] Archie Costello, otherwise known as the antagonist of The Chocolate War, just keeps digging his grave deeper and deeper. He uses his quick-wittedness, ability to think ahead, and undeniable arrogance to get what he wants out of whom he wants. Every student and teacher at Trinity knows he is the law of the school. What Archie says, goes: no conflicts, no altercations, no mercy. He loved to be the center of attention and hated when someone came out looking better than him. Archie never lost his cool. He was always calm, which gave his followers a sense of assurance, safety. Though Carter was the official leader of The Vigils, everyone knew Archie was the one who ran the show. He was the ‘brains’ of the organization and he knew it. Archie knew he was awesome.

PRE READING

1. Jerry lives in a universe that, for the most part, sucks. His mom died, he can’t talk to his dad, he’s not too great at football, and now thanks to his own stupidity and the vigils devilish hands at play, his school career is about to be massacred like a lost Twinkie stumbling into a fat camp. I can’t relate completely to his world, but they run some parallels. I could never tell my parents anything, and I can’t even tell them that. I’m horrible at sports, and even though I never really cared about sports, I’m not very good at what I do like anyway. Plus, I’m most defiantly not the most popular kid in school… Hey, maybe we’re more similar then I once thought.

2. Superimpose the rubbish scholar.
I will not gloat.

Bulging roughneck, a siphon for malice.

Gravel pit pledge,
Not a Musketeer, nor a stooge.
I feel no influence.

Solicit a roster?
Hilarity entices.

Is a showdown in hand?
Not my wish for sure.

Crucify the sub-humans?
Ecstasy for the bastards.

I choose the scapegoat,
And diagnose the cavity.

Vulnerability is not my reason

I choose the mutual resignation,
And walk a separate path.

Now granted, not every word was from the list, but like 90% was. Plus it’s SWEET! So kudos to myself. Not to mention I was able to include the word “bastard”. Now, why did I write this? Well I guess it kinda talks about the groups I see in this school. Like Jerry, I don’t exactly have a strong school rep, but my posses tight! And we choose not to go with the flow of a large group, its cool though; we get along sweet with the student body… I think that covers it.

3. Who knows!? What Jerry does is crazy. Nobody messes with the vigils, so I’m sure he’s in for it good. Maybe it has to do with his mom dying and he just doesn’t want to swim along like everything’s cool. Or possibly, his outlandish need to be different. Like I said in response numero uno, he has a crazy messed up life. The dudes a wreck, and when you’re treading in chaotic waters like he is you feel like stirring up your life a bit.

THE REAL STUFF

1. Well I feel that the Bro Leon lays the smack down hard on his pupils. The guys chaotic and a total creeper. He’s like “dude I love you good job”, then tells you to go away cause you’re a cheat and you smell like rotting flesh. What the!? Seriously I’d have major schizophrenia with a side order Social Anxiety Disorder, plus a real bad twitch, I’m sure.

2. Defiantly Jerry. All the way man. Him and goob are like Batman and robin, but like oldschool Batman with the non-creepy voice and the niceness and stuff. He’s having a real tuff time but I think with his uber defiance he can get rid of Leon and the dreaded chocolate sells, and make Trinity a totally sweet place.

3. If anything Greenup suffers from a serious lack of school spirit. We’re really running low on the spirit sauce, cause everyone is taking the stereotype and running with it. And, as far as how much is necessary, well all I can say is somewhere between us and trinity looks pretty good. I hear those Trinity guys are real creeps when it comes to their school… And that my friends is irony.

4. Yes, Goob! What a sweet dude. He’s pretty much Jerry's only pal and one of the first this year to be taken as a victim of the vigils. He feels bad about loosening all the screws but at least, unlike Jerry, he knew not to mess with the vigils. Now he’s quitting football and running, his two favorite things, all because this mess with Jerry and the chocolates is really crazing him out.

5. Ha, Tubs. What a great name. He’s all worried cause he’s got this mondo hot babe of a girlfriend and no money. So his trying to sell chocolates like crazy to buy her stuff she doesn’t even care about. But when he does how the heck is he gonna get the money for Leon?! And as for Paul, well he just sucks at life, and can’t seem to sell a single box of the junk. Even the pee lady turned him down.

7. Ooooo… what a douche move. Archie had convinced his group that they were playing a trick on Jacques, but then turns it around by telling him the trigger word! Now the Brother is abusing it and saying ecosystem, or whatever it is, like a million times. Causing the vigils playthings to do like a zillion jumping jacks and get totally wiped out. Thus proving that Archie rules again, and feeding his glutinous ego.

8. Ohhh…. I think I accidentally answered this in the pre reading questions. You were looking for me to talk about his assignment then weren’t you? Well I’ll just explain now. Originally it was one of the Vigils assignments for Jerry to refuse the chocolates for ten days. My thoughts on why Jerry mad the outrageous decision to keep saying no after ten days is written out in pre-reading questions # 3.

9. I’ve defiantly felt that kinda mental physical sick thing before. It sucks! You feel awful and sometimes get headaches. You feel so tired all the time and your stomachs on a Roller Coaster ride non-stop. I hate it, but I’m no doctor so I really don’t know how they’re connected. Maybe its just a mind state that sort of creeps up behind you and grabs you by the you know whats. All I know is I try to stay positive and avoid it.

10. I'm not to sure. This is a tough question for me. I really cannot see how the teachers would start doing something like taking on the vigils. Plus, I think that the teachers are really no better than the vigils as far as that goes. Something should probably be done, I know I wouldn’t like being told to do something and having no way out. Of course I feel like that every time I have to do a double uber analysis worth like a gillion points. Just kidding Parsons.

11. They seem to not care to much. It’s torture for the victims but it’s almost like a school pride thing. It’s become part of Trinity and that’s insane. Almost like a freshman hazing thing cept it effects the whole school. I must say though, they seem to enjoy the breakup of monotony by the vigils assignments.

12. Ooo, I was gonna say Archie, but I'm most defiantly going to have to say Brother Leon. The dudes a creep and he’s creating havoc in the school. He has spent all this money he never had, and he individually destroys all the students lives, including Archie’s!

Pre Reading Questions

1. Jerry’s poster in his locker could have many meanings. I personally inferred it as the following; Jerry sees himself as just a small insignificant person. The poster asks whether he should ever be bold enough to stand out, or stand up for something. It means he might should just fit in and do what he is told. This is actually very symbolic for many reasons. At the beginning, Jerry would never stick out or stand up. Later on in the book, Jerry becomes quite a rebel. In fact, the story is based on Jerry’s rebellion. So Jerry’s views on the quote may have very well changed.

2.Archie’s sarcastic smirk caused nausea.
Sourly smuggling students with distress.
Deceptive, yet awesome
Students bellow with contempt.

I chose sarcastic to show Archie’s personality. I chose contempt to show how others view him. Deceptive and awesome show the contrast making him who he is.

3. Jerry just wanted to fit in. He never really achieved this, however. Jerry’s rebellion started by a summon from the Vigils. Jerry did not want to start the “chocolate war”. It is a big turning point in the book when Jerry refuses to receive the chocolates, after the vigils tell him to. It was probably a cause of mixed emotions. First, Jerry was rebelling the Vigils by not listening to them. Secondly he was rebelling the school and Leon by not supporting the chocolate sale. Lastly, he might have just been tired of the sale, and been supporting the thoughts of the students.

Reading Questions

1. There are many examples in the novel of bullying going on among adults. The main example of this is Brother Leon picking on his students. Leon enjoys torturing students. Leon can get away with this because of his position in the school. He uses savvy and intellect to pick on the students mentally and physically. Another example of bullying in the novel is Brother Eugene. Eugene, however, is the victim of the bullying. Eugene’s timid and passive personality makes him an easy target for bullies. He is often picked on by students, directly, and indirectly. The main example of this is the Vigil assignment carried out in his room.

2. Jerry Renault is obviously the protagonist of the story. He plays the biggest part in the novel and is considered the “good guy” of the story. Jerry is a good person because he stands up for what he believes in. Jerry disagrees with the Vigils and the school, and stands alone following his own beliefs. He becomes most famous when saying the most memorable quote of “no” when asked to participate in the school chocolate sale, in which everyone was usually expected to participate.

3. School spirit is the base of a school. A school is truly nothing if no one really believes in it and supports it. Trinity definitely has school spirit, as almost every student strives to sell chocolate. I don’t think Greenup has as much school spirit as it needs. Most students really don’t care about the wellbeing of the school. Our school would be much more successful with the support of students.

4. The Goober seems to be a pushover. He is very worrisome and passive. This in turn makes him unhappy. Goob is made most unhappy when summoned by the vigils for an assignment. He is also nervous when jerry carries our his assignment. Goober tries to escape his troubles by playing football and running.

5. Tubs was in desperate need of money, so he dipped into the chocolate budget. It was humiliating for him to have to steal from the school and his father to buy his girlfriend a gift. Paul simply could not sell chocolates. His main embarrassment was being mocked by a busy mother who had no pity for him and also no desire for chocolates.

6. In this world, you are indeed either a victim or a victimizer. When I say this, I mean that if you don’t bully people, you get bullied. I think it is very hard to be in between. The sad thing is, most are the victims. Much is controlled by the harsh victimizers of the world.

7. I think that while Archie disrespects Jacques, he appreciates his intellect. He sees him as a fellow bully. Archie tips him off to see what he will do with the information. He enjoys it when Jacques turns it back around on the students. “Beautiful”, Archie might say.

8. Before, Jerry would never have acted in such rebellion. After being mentally altered by the Vigils, he rebels on his own. Jerry simply doesn’t know how to stop rebelling. He is so influenced by others, that he continues to follow them even when he doesn’t have to.

9. Mental stress and physical stress are very connected. Jerry is physically stressed from the beatings he takes at football. This builds with the mental stress provided by nervousness in Leon’s class. This can also lead to physical stress factors like sweat and fidgeting. I have experienced this stress on tests and with basketball.

10. I would want rid of the vigils if I went to school with them. I couldn’t stand to be constantly bothered by them. I would grow tired of their pranks. It would be bad to go to a school that was actually ran by the students more than the staff, like it is at Trinity.

11. The students in the school are scared of the Vigils. They would never betray them. The students know that the power of the vigils is too much too tamper with. Therefore, the Vigils do whatever they want.

12. Archie is the antagonist of the novel. Archie is a bully. He bullies both students and teachers. He controls every action of the Vigils. Most people hate Archie, but would never go against him because of his position and power

Questions Part 2-

Pre/ Post Reading Questions.
1) Jerry has a poster in his locker saying “Do I dare disturb the universe?” This is very cool because the universe that he is living in at the moment in the book isn’t the best to live in. Actually it’s probably one of the worst. He is attending a school that has not only student bullies but teachers who bully as well. He is to the point that he cannot take it anymore something has to be done. I believe that that poster gives him the confidence, and then support that he needs to make things right in the school that he attends, while also giving him the courage to stand up to those who bully him. I too have been in that situation, feeling like everything is wrong and that you have completely lost all control over your life. A bully’s number one goal is to hurt you and make you feel like you are dirt beneath their feet. Do not all them to do so. Disturb the Universe it needs it.
Confession of A Bully
There is a confession that needs to be said.
Something has happened something was done
Blood stained scarlet red drips down the bleachers
The exit would, our victim’s head.
It wasn’t supposed to end this way.
No one was supposed to get hurt
Only a prank meant to scare
Instead it became vicious; violent
He struck his face with ridiculous force.
A fierce beating was made against a tired innocent boy.

Who were we to mock the situation
To make his life a living burning hell?
Why do we cause such annoyance and allow it to go so far?
A boy lay unconscious and bleeding. Do we help him?
NO!
We leave him there to die.
But only after our pathetic taunts.
They kicked him and I watched.
To afraid to stand up
To afraid to say STOP!
The nausea sets in, and I can feel my stomach turning.

The top story the next morning on the news
“Student found brutally beaten and murdered”

{Annoyance; pranks; scarlet; vicious; taunts; fierce; confession; nausea}

3) In this novel the students are supposed to sell chocolates for Brother Leon. However, one boy refuses to do so. That boy, is Jerry Renault. He decides that he isn’t going to take the chocolates. He feels that its not right, and he intends to stand up for what he believes in. He wants to change the school, and not let bullying continue. He wants to show that he isn’t controlled by the school.

Reading Questions:
1) One person that comes to mind in the novel is a teacher that bullies his students. That teacher is Brother Leon. He likes to intimidate the students into selling the chocolates. He uses his power of force, and the power of fear to get them to do whatever it is that he wants done. There is also an instance in the book where a teacher was bullied. Brother Eugene gets bullied in the book. Goober came in and began unscrewing things in his room, and caused complete chaos. However, Eugene said nothing. He’s an easy target for bullying.
2) The protagonist of the novel “The Chocolate War” is a boy by the name of Jerry Renault. The definition of a protagonist is the leading character, hero, or heroine of a drama or literary work. Jerry is the protagonist because he takes on so much. He has two of the worst bullies in the school after him; the gang and Brother Leon. He has a lot of guts.
3) I think that you should have a lot of school spirit at your school. You need to love the school enough to wear it’s colors proudly and not be afraid to say “Hey I go to Blah; Blah; Blah.” Ok maybe without the Blahs but you get what I’m saying. I think that we should draw the line where someone gets hurt. If it turns into an uproar or fight then it’s a little too much school spirit. I believe that we do have school spirit at Greenup County. And I think we wear it proudly. We have spirit week during homecoming, and we attended as many games as we can. And even if we suffer a loss we still continue to wear our colors proudly.
4) Goober is a very fun character. At the start of the school year he is down to earth and happy go lucky. But, whenever Jerry refuses the chocolates again he seems troubled and upset. He cares a lot for Jerry. And he wants to stick by him with whatever happens, but he really just wants him to be ok. And he thinks that if he accepts the chocolates that everything will be ok for Jerry and will go back to normal.
5) Paul went to a lady’s house to sell the chocolates and when he got there the house stunk with pee. He instantly got rejected with the chocolates and then he began feeling sorry for older people. He went on to other houses and didn’t sell any.
6) I think in some instances that is true. But, only because we see so much bullying going on in our lives. We have terrorists, and murderers and attackers. They could all be put under the category of a bully.
7) He did it so that it would turn the tables on the other kids so that they looked like fools to their classmates. And he also let the Brother know about the word so that he would be sure to say it.
8) He doesn’t know why he did. The word no just came out of his mouth. He felt that he did not need to sell the chocolates and the instant reaction got to him before he thought about it.
9) Mental and physical stress are connected because they intertwine with each other. Whenever you are nervous your stomach turns and you feel sick. Whenever you are scared you can also feel sick. I have felt that way many times.
10) Yes, I think the teachers should do something about the Vigils. They have no right to terrorize the students in that school. No bully does. And I would hope that my school teachers and principals would do their best to wipe the bullying out
11) Many of them are scared of the Vigils. They think that they run the school. Which in some cases is true. The students follow their assignments just so they don’t get beat up. No matter what it is, they do it.
12) The antagonist of the novel is very different from Jerry Renault the protagonist. His job is to humiliate and scare the students of his school. He is the leader of the gang, and he does his work by creating psychological punishments for the victims he bullies. Each is specific to the person. He is horrible and cruel, and someone needs to take care of him. The definition of an antagonist is the adversary of the hero or protagonist of a drama or other literary work.

PRE/POST READING QUESTIONS

1. Jerry has a poster in his locker that reads, "Do I dare disturb the universe?". Describe the universe that Jerry lives in and compare it to your own in a 100-word response.
The universe that the question is talking about is described throughout the book, in a few different places. It says that the universe in the book is their world that they live in, and is created by the school and the Vigils. Like they say that the Vigils pretty much rules, and takes over the school. What they do or says goes to anyone. When they do this it creates tensions to everyone and disturbs the universe. Other students are scared to speak up and say something, until one day Jerry comes along and stands up for them as well as him. Everybody becomes so overwhelmed with it that they just want to kill the person who disturbed the universe, even if it had no impact on them.
2. Using the following vocabulary guide drawn directly from the novel, create a magnetic/found poem. Describe which words you chose,
and why.
Pondering
Lousy
Immature
Clicks
Fighters
Haters
Bullies
Greenup County High
I choose these words because they Kind of describe our school in a few ways. Not everyday is like this but most of the time it can be.

3. Jerry decides not to sell the chocolates, starting the war that is mentioned in the book's title. Describe Jerry's decision and why he chose not to sell them in a 100-word response.
Jerry decides not to sell the chocolates, because he feels the need that he don’t have to. This is what starts the war mostly, others tend to think that Jerry thinks that he’s to good to sell the chocolates. At first they think that him not wanting to sell chocolate is like a symbol for boldness, for him and the whole school, and then it kind of gets out of hand. Then this is where the chocolates become the reason for boxing match, and also where Archie gets control over Jerry, brother Leon, and pretty much everyone else as well.

READING QUESTIONS PART 2:

1. Adults bully as well as children, often producing even more dramatic effects. Describe adult bullying or adults being bullied in the novel.
As the question says, adults bully just as well as kids, and they can do it right back just as good. Adult bullying can be between adults, or towards children. Some bullying can be because of work related things, such as seniority, and who’s been there longer. Other times it can just be for anything. Bullying in the novel can either be said by the teacher, or by the vigils. Teachers tell kids “Since I’m the teacher you do what I say when I say”, and things like that. Then the vigils are just there and choose to bully.
2. Describe the protagonist of the novel.
The protagonist n the novel is Jerry. He is the type of person who stands up to others who are bullying others. He seems to like to put things off as long as he can, for example selling chocolate bars. Jerry really don’t want to sell them so he procrastinates as long as he can.

3. How much school spirit should we have? Where should we draw the line? Do we have school spirit at Greenup County High School?
We at Greenup County have a lot of school spirit for things such as our athletics, academics, to our clubs. We should draw the line nowhere, because this gives our students confidence to good at everything they do. Yes we have a lot of school spirit here at or school.
4. Describe the Goober.
The Goober’s real name is Roland Goubert. He is a football player at the Trinity school. Goober is the type of person who is quiet, and keeps everything to himself all bottled up.
5. Paul and “Tubs” have humiliating experiences selling chocolates. Describe them.
Tubs humiliating experiences selling chocolates is that he went around from house to house trying to sell chocolates to buy his girlfriend a necklace that she wanted. Then Paul’s humiliating experiences selling chocolates was just not really trying at all to sell them, while others were at least trying to.
6. Do you think the world is made up of either victims or victimizers? Explain.
I believe that it is an equal amount because the world is filled with both. Also not only can a victim be a victim but also a victimizer. Also I think that the world is coming to be a very bad place for everyone to live in.
7. Why does Archie tell Brother Jacques about the trigger word?
Archie tells brother Jacques about the trigger word, so that it would turn the tables on the other students making them look like fools or stupid.
8. Why does Jerry continue to refuse to sell the chocolates after the assignment is over?
Jerry continues to refuse to sell the chocolates after the assignment was over because he says that he didn’t want to. But Archie and the other Vigils was going to make him do it whether he really wanted to or not, because everybody does things they don’t want to just because they have to.
9. Jerry feels sick every morning because he has to face Leon. How are physical and mental stress connected, and have you ever experienced them relating to each other?
They are both connected because if you worry yourself mentally after so long, then your body will just not be able to handle it causing you to look the way you feel. YES I have experienced them both just recently, for being nervous about our competition for FCCLA and also Mr. Parsons homework being do as soon as I get back to school.
10. Should the teachers do something about the Vigils? If they were in your school, would you want them to?
Well yes I think that the teachers should do something about the vigils and the way they act. Even though they pretty much run the school, the teachers could do something to stop them. In yes most definitely I would want teachers to do something if there was vigils in our school. There is people like vigils that are in our school but nobody really can do or really try to stop them.
11. How do the other students in the school feel about the Vigils? Describe their reactions.
The other students in the school are kind of afraid of the vigils only because they bully them a lot. Their reactions is like they’re afraid to say something, or speak up because they don’t know what’s going to happen next. The Jerry comes along and stands up for him and others.
12. Describe the antagonist of the novel.
The antagonist of the novel is Jerry, because he goes against Brother Leon, by not selling the chocolates like he’s suppose to.

Pre-Reading Questions #2
1. Jerry lives in a universe where everything he does is controlled. Him and the other students are pressured into doing a lot of things that they do not want to do, just because of their schools’ “tradition.” Jerry is the type of person though, that stood up for what he believed in. My universe is not so similar to this. At my school, we don’t really have traditions and we don’t get thought of differently if we do not take place in school activities. I am kind of like Jerry though. Because I always stand up for what I believe in, and I don’t let people push me around, and make me do things I do not want to do.

2. The whole school is a Mockery
Full of endorsements
Students full of unaccountability
Afraid to diagnose the problem
Everyone has a nemesis
Which are the Vigils
Afraid to make a gesture
The whole place is ridiculous

I chose the words that I used to represent how everybody is the school, including the teachers, are afraid of the Vigils. Everyone’s nemesis’ are the Vigils, and they are forced to do things they do not want to do.

3. At the beginning of this part in the novel, Jerry does not choose to sell the chocolates; he has an assignment from the Vigils, to deny the chocolates for 10 days. Most of the students in the school know what is going, so they do not say anything. After the ten days are up though, Jerry still denies the chocolates, which is a major shocker to the whole class, as well as the teacher. I believe that Jerry chose not to sell the chocolates because he did not want to give in to the pressure that the rest of the class is under, just because of a stupid tradition.

Reading Questions #2

1. In the novel, a lot of bullying goes on. The bullying comes from the teachers, as well as the students. In the novel, Brother Leon, is a bully in some ways. He is the type of person that pushes his students to do things that they do not want to do. Also in the novel, the students bully a teacher, by almost taking out the screws in the furniture in his room, and everything collapsing.
2. The protagonist in the novel is Jerry. Jerry is the first person in the novel that actually stands up to the bully’s and stands up to his teacher, because they are trying to force him to do something that he does not want to do. He is kind of standing up for what he believes in.
3. I believe that school’s should have a lot of school spirit, but there is a line that does not need to be crossed. Students taking place in traditions from their high school is great, but when students start breaking the rules, and cussing at games and stuff, I think that is a little bit out of hand. My freshman year, there was a lot of school spirit. Everyone got into the games and cheered, but this year is completely different. I don’t think that there is much school spirit this year.
4. At this point in the book, the Goober is described as depressed. Ever since Room Nineteen had fallen apart. He had been living in a state of shock.
5. Paul and “Tubs” have humiliating stories, while trying to sell chocolates. Paul just simply can’t sell anything. He goes from house to house trying to sell but never has any luck. “Tubs” is trying to raise money to buy his girlfriend a bracelet. He is going to use his fundraiser money to buy the bracelet, then get the money back somehow later. This results in him having to steal money off of his dad.
6. I think that the world is made up of Victims. At one point in everybody’s life, everyone is a victim. Yes, I agree that people are victimizers, but there are more victims in the world, because once something bad happens to one person, it effects everyone around them, causing them to become victims.
7. Archie told Brother Jacques about the trigger word, because he was playing a trick on the students. He wanted the teacher to be in on it. He did this so that the rest of the class would look stupid.
8. Jerry continues to refuse to sell chocolates after the assignment is over because he wants to stand up to the teacher. He wants to make his point that he does not want to sell chocolates, and that he is not going to. He is standing up for what he believes in.
9. I have noticed that when I am mentally stressed out, that it leads to giving me a headache. Whenever I am really stressed out, I start to think to much, which always gives me a sick feeling in my stomach, and I get a headache. Whenever I get hurt in track, it causes me to think to much about what I have done, which causes mental stress also.
10. I do not think that the teachers should do anything about the Vigils, unless they actually catch THEM in the act of doing something bad. If the students are that easily manipulated by the Vigils, then I believe that the student should be held responsible for what happened. If the vigils were at my school, I wouldn’t want the teachers to do anything, because if the person is to big of a baby to stand up to the Vigils, then they should get punished for the assignment.
11. The other students in the school are afraid of the Vigils, and they all know that their “assignment” will always be coming. The students know not to do the Vigils wrong, because their assignment will be worse. Most of the students know what is going on, but none of them tell on the Vigils, because they are too afraid.
12. I believe that the antagonist of the novel is Archie. Archie is one of the main leaders of the Vigils. He is the character that gives out the assignments to the students, and gets them in trouble. He is the bad guy in the novel.

Pre-Reading Questions:

1. Jerry’s universe consists of his mother dying, his father walking around like a zombie, and The Vigils. After his mother died, it seemed like his father wasn’t really there, when they would have a conversation his dad would always say, “fine”. On top of his home life, he attends Trinity where they are having a huge chocolate sell. At Trinity, there is a group of boys called, The Vigils, they bully kids and give them assignments. After he gets the assignment from The Vigils and after it was over still not accepting the chocolates, his universe got a little crazier. More and more people quit selling and Brother Leon and The Vigils were on his case. Though he still refused to sell. So my life is why different from Jerry’s. My home life is happy; we all get along great. I don’t have to deal with selling something for the school or anybody or group like The Vigils.
2. Where’s the compassion?
Have you not enough antic?
You act with such poise but are filled with malice.
I become mute,
No haven to turn to
I begin to topple with unbearable agonies.

I used the words compassion, antic, poise, malice, mute, haven, topple, and agonies from the novel. Compassion means sympathetic pity and concern for the sufferings or misfortunes of others. I used compassion because Archie or any bully for that matter shows none. I used antic which means bizarre because Archie gives a lot of bizarre assignments. He also acts with gracefulness which is why I used poise. He’s full of the intention or desire to do evil, so I used the word malice. Mute is another word that I used because people become mute in these situation. They don’t stand up for themselves and say no to the bully.

3. Jerry chose to sale the chocolates even after The Vigils assignment was over. Jerry didn’t plan on not taken the chocolates after the assignment was over, it just happened. It was something deep within him, something that he really wanted and believed he should do. In chapter 18 on page 98; Jerry says, “Was it because of what Brother Leon does to people, like Bailey, the way he tortures them, tried to make fools of them in front of everybody.” I think this may be a reason for what Jerry does; it may have triggered something deep inside him.

Reading Questions

1. In the novel, several times we see Brother Leon bulling other students. For example in chapter 6, Brother Leon picks on Bailey about getting A’s. He makes him stand in front of the whole class. He accuses Bailey of cheating and twists his word to make it seem like he was confessing. In the novel we also see a The Vigils assignment meant to torture Brother Eugene.
2. The protagonist in the novel would be Jerry Renault. Though he is very quiet his actions speak longer than his words. He refuses to sale the chocolates even after The Vigils assignment was over shows strength and determination.
3. I think at Greenup County High School there is some school spirit, but not as much as there should be. We never have any pep rallies and at games, in the student section, the students are just sitting there not getting into the game. If we had a lot of school spirit, no matter what even if we were losing, the students should be yelling and supporting the players.
4. Goober is a tall boy that plays football with Jerry and is an amazing runner. He was given an assignment form The Vigils which was Room Nineteen. Because of the assignment given to him, he was left traumatized. He could barely sleep and night and later even quit the football team.
5. Tubs walked through the neighborhood like a madman, trying to sell the chocolates. He was trying to sell the chocolates to get enough money to buy his girlfriend a bracelet for her birthday. Paul went to a house in which a woman answered the door with a two or three year old tugging on her shirt and a baby was calling for her. The woman said sorry and shut the door in his face.
6. I think the world is made out of both, victims and victimizers. At some point in time we are all victims, for instances, we all will be bullied. And at some point in our life we will be a victimizer. Even if we are being mean to a sibling or pulling a mean prank on them, you still are a victimizer.
7. Archie gave an assignment making boys jump up and down every time Brother Jacques said the word environment. He told Brother Jacques about the assignment to make the classroom feel stupid and be embarrassed. He also did this to show he was still
8. Jerry doesn’t really know for sure why he still refuses the chocolates. He does consider it’s about Brother Leon and how he tortures students, he wants to stand up to Brother Leon. Also, Jerry wants a normal life, he don’t want any more assignments and no more Vigils.
9. When you are mental stressed out in affects you physical as well. When you are mental stressed out, it will change the way you look, feel, act, and do things. I know when I’m mental stressed I just want to lay around the house and my body feels weak.
10. I do believe that the teachers should do something about The Vigils. They are bulling the students and teachers as well. Their on the verge of taking of Trinity and nobody is or will do anything about it.
11. Some students at Trinity have different opinions of The Vigils. When the assignment was pulled on Brother Eugene and his classroom, the students were giving The Vigils credit for the work done. Though in chapter 27, Rollo was in the process of receiving an assignment and he stood up to Archie, and saying he’s not scared. On the other hand most students are scared of them and their assignments, when Goober was given the assignment of Room Nineteen, he about passed out. It affected him in the long run as well.
12. The antagonist of the novel is Archie Costello. He is the leader of the group called, The Vigils. He makes up assignments that affect people mentally or physically and sometimes both. He likes to be in control and having power. By helping out Brother Leon with the chocolate sale, he knows it will give him power. He won’t get in trouble by the other teachers.

Emily_is_rad said...

1) In the novel Jacques bullies his students. He was tipped off by Archie that if he said environment then the students would all have to jump up and dance around. So he kept saying it to make them look stupid. This is a more manipulative and subtle way of bullying, as compared to the usual physical violence that kid bullies resort to.
2) Jerry is just an average ordinary kid. He wants to excel in school, football, and wants to have a girlfriend. These are things on almost every guys’ agenda. However, Jerry doesn’t want to follow the crowd and be bullied into making decisions. He just decides he wants to do his own thing and his own thing doesn’t include selling the chocolates. He kind of feels empowered going against the grain “Do I dare disturb the universe”. Something in him tells him that obeying the vigils and selling the chocolates is the wrong thing to do. Jerry Is also pretty brave because he goes to fight Janza when he knows the odds are against him.
3) I personally don’t have a lot of school spirit. The only thing that makes me mad is when people say Greenup sucks or people from Greenup are stupid. So I guess that I do have enough school spirit to where comments like that make me mad. I think the school should have a good amount of school spirit. Enough to take pride in the reputation of there school. And enough school spirit to make there school look good and to educate there students to the best of there ability. There is a great deal of school spirit at Greenup County but not all students are school spirited. We should draw the line when school spirit becomes more important than the student.
4) The Goober is a nice and sensitive kid. He was easily used by the vigils but then felt really bad for the assignment he had to do. He also was going to join Jerry and stop selling the chocolates so he wouldn’t be alone in his stand against the school. Goober was a very good friend and was there for Jerry after his fight with Janza. However the Goober is a little cowardly because he quits football just because of the vigils. However Goober is very sensitive because he felt so sick about what he did to brother Eugene that he didn’t even come to school for a few days because his conscience was bothering him so bad.
5) Tubs rode his bike around the whole neighborhood and didn’t sell one box of chocolates. And his bike had flat tires and he is overweight.
6) I think victims. Because victimizers are either one person or a group of persons. And they aren’t only going to strike once they will keep on making people victims so the ratio of victims to victimized is larger. For example if there was some type of organization that had the type of power to affect a large group of people they could victimize a lot of people. Also victimizers want power so they will try and take out anyone competing for their power. Making other potential victimizers victims.
7) Because Archie doesn’t care whom he humiliates as long as he does it. So he tipped the teacher off to humiliate the kids when the kids thought it was the other way around. Archie just wants to show that he is in control.
8) Jerry believed somehow that selling the chocolates was the wrong thing to do. He also didn’t agree with the school and vigils methods. He kind of liked the attention he got for not selling the chocolates he was a hero. But then everything took a turn for the worst and he still stuck to his goal of not selling chocolates. He just knew that giving into the vigils and brother Leon was wrong.
9) I think that physical and mental illness are definitely connected. It’s like when you get nervous and you start feeling nauseated. If you could just calm down you wouldn’t be nauseated anymore. And yes I have experienced mental and physical illness connected with each other. Sometimes when I am worrying about something and I just think about it not stop I get jittery my heart starts racing and I feel sick to my stomach. And then when I go to sleep I either dream about what I’m worrying about and if that doesn’t happen when I wake up I just feel this crushing weight of misery.
10) Yes I think they should. You cant have all these kids being made to do things they don’t want to. The vigils tear down kids like Goober and destroy kids like Renault. I do not think it is right for the teachers to allow some organization to manipulate kids and teachers’. If the vigils were in my school I would want the teachers to punish every member and put a stop to it.
11) The other students in the school fear the vigils but also take what they say or do as law. They would do whatever the vigils said because they are afraid of them but respect them to. That’s why when the vigils made selling chocolate the thing to do everyone turned on Jerry.
12) Archie Costello is very clever for his age. He is a manipulative boy who only cares for himself. He is not willing to get his own hands dirty but makes others do his bidding for him. He is pretty arrogant and thinks he can do whatever he wants and will never mess up. He is cruel and conniving and terrorizes teachers and students alike for his own amusement. He is also a blackmailing liar who will use anything he can gain the upper hand on someone.

Pre Question
1) The world that Jerry lives in isn’t much different than the one that I live in. However, I do not have to deal with a vicious organization like the vigils I still have to deal with cruel manipulative people. In Jerry’s world what the vigils say or do is law and they go unpunished and unopposed. That Is until Jerry came along and didn’t do what they said. He lives in a world where everything is fine as long as your doing what everyone else is doing. It is only okay to do your own thing if it is the same as everybody else’s own thing. In his world the students are controlled by fear and respect by the vigils. The students he goes to school with are also violent and blood thirsty. This is shown when in his fight with Janza his fellow students are shouting kill him kill him. The world I live in is pretty much the same.
2) Jerry decides not to sell the chocolates because he feels that it is wrong. He decides that he wants to do his own thing and that doesn’t include selling the chocolates. He doesn’t want to be manipulated or used like a puppet by the vigils or Brother Leon. Jerry realizes that what that people like the vigils and brother Leon are only out for personal gain and making others miserable. He doesn’t want any part of the school which includes its chocolate sell. He also felt kind of like a hero when he first refused to sell the chocolates.

Pre Questions

1.) The universe hat Jerry lives in is full of corruption and injustice. The good get punished and the bad get by with no punishment whatsoever. A conniving headmaster, who is in cahoots with a notorious underground gang of juveniles, runs his school. The Vigils are responsible for the havoc reeked on the school daily and also for the survival of the school. My universe has few if any similarities with Jerry’s. He does live in a sleepy town with not much going on ever, which is the exactly what Greenup is.

2.) I wrote this poem to decribe the phone call that Jerry recieved from Archie. In the phone call he vows to help Jerry clear his name, but its really just a trap.

That venomous smirk
His sarcastic compassion-
Poker faced adversary-
Vicious eyes fostering false hope
Feebly accepting the malicous hoopla

3.) At first jerry was forced to refuse the chocolates because it was an assignment from the vigils. When he refused to get the chocolates from Brother Leon everyday people started to think they could do the same. He became a sort of hero for standing up to the biggest bully in the school. When the assignment was over and he still refused to take the chocolates he received even more attention from admirers. Jerry had never been a person who people looked up to, but not selling the chocolates made others notice him and he liked the attention. Not taking the chocolates also made Brother Leon an enemy of Jerry's so Jerry felt he had to stand his ground on the decision he made and continue to refuse the chocolates.

Reading Questions 2

1.)Brother Leon is the most obvious adult bully in the novel. I feel like he enjoys conflict and that is one of his reasons for not stopping the Vigils. He has a short temper and takes it out on anyone who is close at the time. He encourages the students he talks to make Jerry sell the chocolates. He even enjoyed being at the fight assembly and watching Janza almost kill Jerry. Brother Eugene is an example of an adult being bullied. When they loosened the screws and his room fell apart, he had a mental breakdown it affected him so much. He doesn't reappear in the novel because of how much mental damage they caused.

2.)Jerry is the protagonist of the novel. The protagonist is the leader of a cause. Even though he was the only soldier in his army, he fought against the bullies of Trinity for individual rights. He did what no one else would do, but everyone wanted to do.

3.)I feel that school spirit is essential to the high school experience. We spend four years of our life in high school, which means that school spirit will eventually develop. However I do not think that school spirit should go as far as it did in the chocolate war. Beating someone up for not participating in a school fundraiser is ludicrous. Here at GCHS, school spirit is about half and half. People either have lots of school spirit or none at all.

4.)Roland Goubert was Jerry's only friend throughout the novel. He wasn't the greatest friend ever because he was really never there for Jerry, but he didn't revolt against him at the word of Archie Costello, so he is still a friend. He was an amazing runner but a coward besides that. He hid at home when he found out that Jerry would be mutinied against by the entire school. He cried because he had to loosen a few desk screws. He was overall one of the nicer characters ion the book.

5.) Tubs was selling the chocolates as a quick way of getting money to buy his girlfriend a bracelet. He has to carry a huge bag of chocolates around town on a bike with flat tires, while making sure his parents don’t see him. After all the trouble he went through he only made $6. Paul attempted to sell the chocolates because he hated being at home. He didn’t sell any chocolates and a woman thought his sales pitch was lame.

6.)I feel that the world is made up of victimizers. Our world is in a constant struggle for power, meaning that one side is always trying to defeat his opponent; trying to make them a victim.

7.)Archie tells Brother Jacques about the trigger word because he wanted to mix things up. He also wanted the vigils to remember that he was in control. It also gives him more attention because it keeps people on their toes about what he will do next.

8.)Jerry Refuses to sell the chocolates after the assignment is over because it is what he believed to be right. He wanted to have a choice, after all Brother Leon gave a choice in accepting the chocolates. He knew that Brother Leon was a huge school bully after witnessing the brother taunt Bailey in front of the class. He realized that defying him was the right thing to do.

9.) When people are too stressed out mentally, from work school or anything else, the stress starts to show physically. It makes you sick and really tired makes you just want to sleep forever. I have been so stressed that I have felt sick before.

10.)I believe that the teachers should do something about the Vigils. I think that the only reason they haven't already done away with them is because they realize that the Vigils have kept the school alive. I would want the teachers to stop the Vigils if they were in my school. If hate and fear is what is keeping a school together then it doesn't need to exist in the first place.

11.) The students fear and respect the Vigils at the same time. They do not want to get an assignment or do something wrong to be on their bad side, but the also think some of the pranks and things that they do are great. When room 19 fell apart, the students wowed and knew it was the Vigils and they seemed to respect the enormity of the prank. Brian Cochran on the other hand doesn’t want anything to do with the Vigils.

12.) Archie is the antagonist of the novel. He uses mental warfare to amuse himself. He uses the students of Trinity as pawns to carry out pranks he wont do himself. He is the brains of the Vigils, and their true leader, making him the main source of widespread fear in the book. Instead of hand-to-hand confrontation with his victims he rallies the support of the Vigils and gives the victim an outrageous assignment they can not refuse.

PRE/POST READING QUESTIONS

1. Jerry’s world that he lives in is one where he has no freedom to do what he wants. There is always someone manipulating him or controlling him to do what they want. He is always worried and stressed about school, and the bullies that roam there. There is no room to be happy and care-free because he always has to watch his back. My world is not a lot like Jerry’s. I don’t have bullies constantly there to pester me and manipulate me like he does. I have more freedom in my school, and don’t have those teachers and groups like the Vigils that run the school, though a lot of kids do, and it shows what some kids go through day to day.

2. The anticipation rises
His smirk knows my defiance
I contemplate the blackmail and
His hand stops my antics
I’m confronted
The assault comes back

In this poem, the words I chose from the novel are anticipation, smirk, defiance, blackmail, confronted, and assault. I felt these words show different aspects from the novel. I chose anticipation, because everyone at some point was nervous about something, anticipating it. I also chose defiance because there is a lot of it throughout the novel, especially where Jerry is trying to defy against the Vigils. I chose confronted, because in the novel students are confronted with their problems, and students are also confronted by other students or teachers. I chose assault and put in the last line because it is the most important of the list. There is a lot of violence throughout the school; the bullies use it to solve their problems.

3. At first, Jerry refuses to sell the chocolates because he was given the assignment from the Vigils. After the ten days are up that he has to refuse them though, he still chooses not to sell the chocolates for Trinity. Jerry chose still not to sell the chocolates, because he wanted to stand up against the Vigils and Brother Leon. He felt he could make a difference if he rebelled against them and show them that they can’t control everyone. He felt that he shouldn’t just take what the Vigils, Brother Leon and bullies altogether do to students and how they treat him and other students.

READING QUESTIONS PART 2:

1. In the novel, one of the teachers at the school of Trinity, Brother Leon, is a bully to the students. For example, during class, he would pick on individual students, making them uncomfortable, just wanting to see them suffer. Also, he blackmailed of the students, because he wanted information about Renault.

2. The protagonist of the novel is Jerry Renault. He is the main character who you are rooting for to win throughout the novel. We follow him through school, him refusing to sell the chocolates, and him being bullied by the Vigils and Brother Leon.

3. I do think that our school has school spirit, though I don’t think that it should be required of all students. Students should be given a choice to whether they want to participate in those kinds of school activities and have school spirit. It shouldn’t be mandatory just because you attend that certain school, because maybe you don’t have pride in where you go.

4. The Goober becomes one of Jerry’s only friends at Trinity. He plays football with Jerry, and tries to support Jerry when he defies the Vigils. He is also the one who was to given the assignment of Room Nineteen, and he was affected greatly, being unable to sleep, and not wanting to play football any longer.

5. During Paul’s time trying to sell the chocolates, he is turned down at every house, nobody wanting to buy the chocolates from him. Tubs’ experience wasn’t really humiliating; he just wanted to use the money he got to buy Rita a present and had even resorted to stealing money from his father.

6. I don’t think you could say that everyone is either a victim or a victimizer. I believe that there are both victims and victimizers in this world. Everyone though, is a victim from someone or something, because you can’t control whether you are one or not. Being a victimizer though is a choice that you have, so I believe that not everybody in this world is one.

7. Archie tells Brother Jacques about the trigger word, because it shows that he is the one who still has the power. It showed Brother Jacques that he knows things that he didn’t know, and it showed the other Vigil members that he is mostly just controlling them.

8. At first, Jerry refuses to sell the chocolates, because it is a Vigil assignment. It never really tells though why he continues to refuse the chocolates. I believe though that Jerry continues, because he is trying to show Brother Leon and the Vigils that they cannot control everybody.
Why does Jerry continue to refuse to sell the chocolates after the assignment is over?

9. You can be mentally stressed, which can make you have physical stress. Sometimes things can impact your life so much, that it can cause you to have physical things wrong with you, or where you believe you do. I have actually experienced this, to where something has affected me physically and mentally.

10. I think the teachers should do something about the Vigils, though they can’t really because Brother Leon is someone who relies on them. Though if they tried, it wouldn’t really help, because they would still be able to bully students someway. If they were in my school, I would want to teachers to try and stop them, though I know that the Vigils have too much power to be stopped.

11. The other students in the school don’t really like the Vigils, but they want to be a part of them. They like knowing inside information about the school and people, but they don’t want to be bullied like Jerry was.

12. The antagonist of the novel is Archie Costello. Archie is the head of the Vigils; the one who gives out assignments to students. He is the one who manipulates people into doing what he wants, like Emile and Obie. He likes to be in control and to have power.

Pre-Post Reading Questions

1. Jerry Renault and I both live in similar universes. We attend a high school dominated by a select few, who everyone is too afraid to stand up to. These people, whether it is the Vigils at Trinity High, or the select few manipulative bullies at Greenup, both groups are able to not only get away with it, but almost looked up to. Jerry and I both are ordinary kids, nothing spectacular, who can easily blend in. We both have pressure coming in at all aspects – from strained relationships with parents, to succeed at sports, with peers, and in school. However, Jerry and I are different in the way he follows through with his Vigil assignment. Not only does he not sell chocolate for those ten days, but he continues to say no from there on out. That shows serious willpower and gusto to defy an unspoken rule, something I myself don’t possess.

2.
Adversary
bestows
obscenity, assertion, contempt, sabotage
cunning, genius, frantic
Defiance.
I chose these words, because they seemed to capture the spirit of the Vigils and their assignments. Although their assignments are unfair, they truly are genius.

3. The initial Vigil assignment was for Jerry Renault to not sell chocolate for the first ten days of Trinity High’s annual chocolate sale, not only providing embarrassment to the timid freshman, but a way of sticking it to the power hungry Brother Leon. However, Jerry continues to refuse to sell chocolates, defying both the Vigils and Brother Leon. He claims to be unable to say yes, caught in a battle of mentality, but I believe there was another rationale behind his actions. By not selling the chocolates, he defies tradition, school spirit, and what is expected. By breaking the unspoken rule, he also breaks out of a social norm, something Trinity is not used to, starting a full out war, thus mentioned in the title.

Reading Questions: Part Two

1. Both adult bullying and bullying of adults occur in this novel. Adult bullying entails Brother Leon’s harsh criticisms of students to see what he can get away with, to his obvious corruptness in the handling of Brian Cochran’s grade. On the other hand, groups like the Vigils pick on weak, innocent, calm natured teachers like Brother Eugene.

2. The protagonist of the novel is Jerry Renault, a reserved and unique freshman. His refusing to sell chocolates is a stance against two of the biggest bullies in school, a secret society known as the Vigils, and a corrupt teacher. He doesn’t do it by violence, or protest, instead he’s silent and does his own thing, even if that thing may be looked at as wrong by societies standards and everyone around him.

3. I believe school spirit is a right, and each individual should choose if they participate or not. We go to school to learn, and do not necessarily have to repay the school by showing spirit towards it. If anything we should be enthusiastic to the taxpayers that provide it for us, but why the school itself? If an individual so chooses, and is not forced, that’s true school spirit. I believe Greenup County has school spirit – we’re there to root on our sports teams, whatever their record may be, we respect our school, and most of us work hard to give our school a good name. Those are aspects of true school spirit, not a bunch of miserable kids being forced to act like they like the place they attend.

4. The Goober is a tall, lanky football player, who loves running and is easygoing. He falls victim to the Vigils assignment of Room 119, in which he is forced to loosen all the nuts and bolts so that everything falls apart. He feels remorse for the incident and has trouble sleeping at night because of it.

5. Paul and “Tubs” have humiliating experiences selling chocolates. Describe them.
When selling chocolates, a few of the boys have humiliating experiences. Paul is unable to sell any chocolates, no matter how many doors he knocks on. “Tubs” is determined to buy his girlfriend a diamond bracelet for her birthday, so him motive for getting money is slightly different. He sells chocolates and pockets some of his father’s money, planning on paying back the chocolate deficit later.

7. The world is made up of both victims and victimizers. That’s what keeps it in balance. You have victims, who have fallen into the stock market slump, welfare line, or homeless, and struggle to make ends meet, but then again you will always have the victimizers: corporate sharks, overpaid CEO’s, and power hungry law officials. However, I believe most of us would be classified as victims, as power lies with the victimizers, and we have no control over most aspects like they do.

8. Archie told Brother Jacques about the trigger word, so the teacher would be in control yet again. The boys jumped up and down, and up and down, a use of Archie’s manipulation and over assertion of power yet again.

9. Jerry’s Vigil assignment was to not sell chocolate for the first ten days. However, Jerry continues to refuse, defying both the Vigils and Brother Leon. Although he claims, he was just unable to sell them, unable to say yes in a battle of mentality, I believe he is doing it to defy Brother Leon and his manipulative ways. He can’t be forced to take them, and it gets under the skin of a teacher who thinks he can get away with anything, so why not continue?

10. Physical stress and mental stress are strongly interconnected. Mental stress can bring an onset of physical illness. This happens in the case of nerves getting to the best of you and making you sick. I have experienced this on several occasions, when your stress level is so great, either due to a mental stressor, physical incident, or environmental factor, and it is enough to take over.

12. I believe the teachers should do something about the Vigils. However, it is evident this would never work out. They could assert their power against a group of gangly high school guys, but that is not the point. The Vigils have a different sort of power, and it is a force to be reckoned with, not only by the school officials, but to the school body as a whole. And anyone who would speak up against the Vigils in the first place would have to be an a idiot, because when word got back around to them, there would be dire consequences, whether teacher or elder.

13. The other students in school have reactions ranging from hatred, to jealousy, to fear, to admiration. On one hand, they are able to get anything they want, with no reprimanding, and possess a certain type of power that would make anyone jealous. Still others look up to them, as they truly do rule the school, and want to be accepted, or even inducted into the elite group. One other group fears the Vigils, such as Jerry Renault and other scared freshman, the ones who have only heard rumors and just wish to blend in rather than stand out and be singled out.

14. Archie Costello, leader of the Vigils, is the antagonist of the novel. He is cunning, and uses psychological games in order to carry out the Vigils heinous assignments. He is feared by all, including elders, and using it to his advantage, gets away with anything. He cares about no one but himself, and will do absolutely anything it takes to get what he wants accomplished.

Pre-Reading Questions

1) Jerry's "universe" can be described as a harsh universe. At home he has to deal with his father, and his depression, and he can't seem to escape that at school because he has The Vigils to deal with. He and I seem to have that in common, not being able to escape our issues, no matter where we go. It always seems as if something always has to go wrong. Whether it be lack of communication with parents, or too much communication with them. Whether it be crazy demands from bullies, or friends who aren't really "friends". He lives in a universe of judgmental people, who only worry about pleasing themselves.

2) It was grotesque, what I had felt inside. The stench fuming from my soul was unbearable. I stood with that ridiculous smirk on my face. Frantically I laughed, hoping to divert my hate, from those who stood close. To me, you're nothing but a sub-human, an obscene whore, and yet I feel so lousy in comparison. To hate those who you envy is so cliché, but muting this won't do anything but cause it to grow.

This found poem was a mix of what most students feel against "The Vigils" and what I feel against someone who I absolutely despise.

3) At first Jerry's rebelliousness was only an assignment, igven to him by "The Vigils". He was told to turn down the offer to sell chocolates, for ten days, and then on the tenth day, take the chocolates from Brother Leon to sell. Jerry, however, continued to deny the sale on the tenth day. It had become more than just an assignment, and developed into much more than what anyone expected. Jerry began to feel as if selling the chocolates wasn't mandatory, and he shouldn't have to sell them if he didn't want to. It was almost as if not selling the chocolates was also a stab in the back of Brother Leon. Whether it was to defy Brother Leon out of hate for him, or to show that he had enough power to do as he pleased, Jerry did both.

Megan Smallwood
3rd period.

1.Brother Leon often bullies his students. Also Brother Eugene gets bullied by having an assignment directed towards him.

2. The protagonist in this novel is Jerry. He faces average struggles and taking the lead role in the story.

3.School spirit is a great tradition to keep throughout the school, however ugly competition can become disorderly. As the years go on Greenup loses school spirit. It seems as if no one cares anymore. I really wish we could change this and support the school.

4.Goober is a football player at Trinity High School. He's one of the only people that Jerry can rely on, but he isn't there always when Jerry needs him. The Vigils target him in an assignment.

5.Paul got rejected many times while asking people to buy chocolate, he was embarrased by this. Tubs had no money, resulting to stealing and ultimately getting into trouble.

6.Victims and victimizers both overtake the world. Each taking their place in separate categories for certain reasons. Although I do think there are ones that don't fall into these categories.

7.Just to prove his authority. He wants to keep ahead on the assignment.

8.He eventually wants to get back at Brother Leon. He eventually gets sick of constantly being bullied.

9.I do believe physical/mental stress are very close related. After a large amount of mental stress it can physically put you in a bad place. I have experienced this. I used to worry alot over everything, eventually making myself sick over situations. I've also experienced this after a great amount of shock/sadness.

10.The school authorities should definitely do something about the Vigils, however that could be risky. They've been in demand for such a long time it might be difficult. If they were in my school I would be very aware and want them to be taken care of. They have power over almost everyone.

11.Other students are very afriad but also used to the fact that the Vigils are in control. It seems as if no one will be the first to stand up and reject an assignment.

12. I think the antagonist of the novel would have to be Archie. Without Archie the Vigils wouldn't have single people out to do assignments. He leads others to make wrong decisions.
