I lost the game.

I think its a story that couldn't have been told by anyone better. The appearntly old african american with a terrible complexion becomes an immediate sight of threat, but in fact, is a gentlemen to be recognized as a social and respectable attribute to society.

He proves a great point at how society views the basic world of humans in diffren't enviorments.A man dressed in dark and weilding so much as a smirk at a dark hour is immediatly considered a threat to rape, rob, or even murder an innocent wonderer of the streets.

I think its mostly about the point of view that people seem to interact with our world in reaction to images. Society roams the streets of cities and the buildings inside the cities. constantly under the shadow of a threat to not make it home. Its because of this threat that people have learned to not trust the image of man. Especialy the image this innocent African American has put off.

There is not much that can be done to resolve this situation with humanity, but to simply suggest attempting to make yourself not seem as a threat, and to also and most importantly, stay safe.

I lost the game!!!

I acctually enjoied the story... it was a hint of shadows at the begining, but then it unfolded to be a story about a guy who was tired of being profiled. And ended up making a way to make people relize that he was a good person and not a murderer, rapist, mugger,... or worse!!! Really he was a big man that anyone would have been afraid of, and then he made people to relize that he was trustworthy by singing/humming tunes for famous authors that sound mello. It did change they that I veiwed people, it made me alittle more afraid of people then I am... like it was sadish,... but these things really happen. But truly the guy was put into a place that he shouldnt have been thrown into... it gave me better point of veiw into his life. He was just in the wrong place at the wrong time... and I feel really bad for him, I would feel terriable if someone veiwed me as someone that was going to hurt someone. And now I have a better outlook and a worse outlook on people, from this story. I LOST THE GAME !!!!

The story "Black Men in Public Space" was very interesting to me. Yes I did enjoy the story, because it was a very moving story it made you think about the way that people treat others and why they do what they do. People judge people on what is on the outside like in the story they thought that he was a bad person because he was a very tall person who was of race and wore an army jacket. They judged him based on what he looked like outside and not what was on the inside. Which in my opinion is clearly in the wrong. This story did make me think because i do know people who are of color but they really great people on the inside. Sure they might be tall and scary looking but that shouldn't affect the way that people look at others. In the world today there are people who are over judgmental and very racists towards others. And I feel that it is their loss of not knowing a great person. It made me think about the way that I treat others and how sometimes life isn't always fair but in the case of judgement it is a harsh way to live. But in the end it shouldn't matter what others think of you but what you think of yourself. I mean sure their opinions might be important to some people but they shouldn't change the way that you think about yourself. Who you are is who you are no matter what others think all that matters is what you think about yourself :)

The story "Black men and public space" helped me change my view of people I never talk to in school and people I see on the streets.I think it was great what he did because the story makes you take a second thought about people, especially the ones that you stereotype. As we talked about in class what is in your mind is scarier than what really is going to happen and it just goes to show you that what the media feeds us about these people isn't all true.
For example you see a story on the news about how five members in a gang mugged an old lady on the streets and took everything she had to own. But then later that night you are slowly driving through town when a man that looks similar to the muggers on tv is walking by minding his own business. Probably the first thing you will do is floor it and drive away as fast as you can because immediately you think he will randomly run up and mug you just like the old lady.
But if you were to stay there you just might have been wrong. That story proves that we live of of what is in movies and what the media tells us. If you were to get to know that person it would be very different.I enjoyed reading and taking a trip in another persons shoes. I never thought that this kind of stuff went on in everyday life. I also like how he was being sarcastic and pretending to act like a mugger in certain parts of the story.
He gave us many ways to look at the situations he was in. He told us about him being a graduate and filled in some details in the second paragraph about himself. But in the beginning he acted like he was spying on a woman. I liked that part best. He gave us a memory to look at and think about throughout the story. I liked that best. Everyone should read and discuss this story like our class did. Trust me things might be way different if you did.

i thought that it was a very good story, and that you should never jump to conclusions about other people, they not all bad people, the people you don't worry about are sometime the worst around you. yes i did enjoy the story because it was telling a true story about someone's life and, what they went throw it lets you know that people are more scared of what they think that what is really there, for an example they are afraid of getting attacked than what they let on. it did change my view on people like the saying a gentle giant. you can't read a person like a book so don't try. if u have not a already you should read the story "black men in public spaces" so u lost the game so quite playing the game

The story had a filling of sympathy we could all fill for. This man he has this aura of worry that someday his own family and friends might be what he calls his next victim. He has to watch every move he makes just so man made anarchy won't break out. For Pete's sake all he has to do is say one wrong word and he's tackled to the floor that is if they can tackle him. The dark way the author wrote this story of loneness and stereo types is amazing. over all the story was brilliant, well conducted, and i'd love to read more of this author's work.
Gir I lost the game!!!

The impression of the story "Black Men and Public Space" was that the author was trying to get a point across. The point that I think the author was trying to get across was that not all sterotypes are right about people. The author was the very opposite from his sterotype. And people still were just judge him by his appearance. Which cause him to feel alienated and hurt.I did enjoy the story. I enjoyed the story because it was showed how the author felt and how he still does feel about the subject of the story. I also liked it because it was very well written and it showed you how easy it is for people to sterotype people because of their appearance. The story helped see it from another person's point of view because it showed how he felted and how he was affected by different people's sterotyping of his appearance.

this story was pretty cool but not that interesting to me because i like blood and gut stuff. I think that the story showed a lot of funny stuff that some people wouldnt think was as funny as i did. they also used some words i did not know what they ment. I also think that this dude is a freken weardo. i fill sorry for his victums. I like that they put a lot of the scenery was in the ghetto because stuff like that goes on in the ghetto. i think next time we read it should be a horror story. i can relate to stuff like that because when i was young i was pretty fat. i used to get in alot of trouble for that because if some one would run there mouth i would try as hard as i could to bust there mouth. so im sorry i did not write that much.

I think that "Black Men and Public Space" was a very good story. Brent Staples told the story in a very good manner. He had me thinking a different way at the binning of the story, but at the end of the story I had a change of thought. I know understand that people are judge by others everyday.
I did enjoy the story I thought that it was very well written. Also it was a good lesson. I think that it teaches you not to judge people but they way they look. Nor to judge them by the way they speak, but to judge them by what they bring to the table. What they show to you, and how they treat others. That is the way to judge someone.
Like I said I do think that it makes me think differently about people. I feel that I will no longer look at people by the way that they present themselves, but by they way they treat me. If someone wants to look a certain way then more power to him or her. Will I judge them? No. I would much rather try to be their friend. I like seeing people being their selves.

THIS IS FOR YOUR WORK ABOUT BLACK PEOPLE PARSONS

i really thought it was just another story of a innocent black guy it really wasnt that interesting. he was smart so what there just like whites and they should be treated any different or any better.

no not really it was just blaa...
because it was boring and it didnt interest me at all. some people are good and some are not but some people like that lady are scared because she hasnt been around them much and has always grew up knowing that they are more likely to cause trouble.

no because i will always treat people the same i have some black friends but there is others i dont like. it just depends, i like any ones whos honest and nice. i judge how they act and how they are inside. you just have to read people like if you can trust them, the best friends you are going to have are the ones you trust and if they trust you. honesty is also a good thing in a friendship so just watch out for who you hangout with. some friends will treat you like crap behind your back and some are like your brothers but you need to get to know someone before you start to trust them with things.

My Impressions of the story "Black Men in Public Space" were that i don't think its fair for people to be judged by people that don't even know them. I enjoyed this story because it was interesting and it might have taught some people a lesson. It didn't change the way i look at people because i don't judge people especially based on their appearance, race, religion, height, weight, or anything like that. This story has taught me that it is sometimes hard to try to see the other persons perspective of something when you don't even know them. The way i look at it is that if someone wants your opinion they will ask you for it.

It was a really good naritive, The guy was a very good writer, and surely very well educated. It was easily the best nartive I've ever read because I usally don't like those kinds of writings, But I really did lke this one.

It's intresting to see what it's like through his point of view. I don't think I ever sterotype to that extant but ofcourse as everyone else I do from time to time it's just humon nature.

And I've experenced miner sterotypes for all my pierceing and things like that, But never anything close to that bad. The worst I've got is my girlfriends grandparants disliking me for them, and one of my Best friends the other Justin Rice's grandpa really dislikes me as well, But I'm still allowed at there house so I don't care. And besides that that guy hates everybody. He won't even eat at McDonnalds bcause they gave a large some of money to a gay rights charity.

But at least he deal's with it in good ways, like wassailing to through them off. What would really be funny though is if he was a robber or mugger or something and was wassailing to through them off. It's really wrong how they sterotype him just because his skin color is different.

It was actually a pretty good story to be so short. I mean you got to feel bad for the dude. the way he has to act just so people wont get the wrong impression of him. For example how he whistled beethoven music. I have been in a similar situation before. I know how he felt.

I enjoyed "black men in public space". everything he says is true about the stereotyping. Like when he met a young women in an alley and she took off running, i could visualize it happening. I have been in that women's shoes (only i didn't run because i had these huge guns lol!).

Im not gonna sit here and say this story changed my impression on stereotyping because i didnt but i will say that it sure helped;)

i really liked the story black man in public spaces it pinpointed a lot of interesting facts such as all african americans who walk around at night wearing boots blue jeans and leather jackets especially in cities like detriot or manhatten are gonna be viewed as muggers ,murders, and rapists just because of the color of there skin and its sad . this guy brings this point to reality by telling this story. This guy was tormented during the day and was tormented all when he could not sleep because of it. This guy was judged right off the bat just because of the way he looked and sadly this very same thing happens to innocent African Americans all the time and its growing worse day by day and its not fair this story speaks out in very different ways first it tells the the story of how this man put up with what he put up with it also has a story behind the story as I like to call it what that means is it also tells the story of many others who have been in the same position that the man in the story was in and worse.

Well done guys!

You make some interesting posts about your own bias. It is interesting to think about how the media affects the way that we think and respond to others - it really shows what a responsibility that newsmakers have. Hopefully, articles such as this will help people realize that a man should be judged on character alone.

I look forward to your continued participation in our blogs.

I think that "black men in public space" was good but not that interesting.
It didnt really change the way i veiw people because i dont judge people.
It teaches you not to judge people by the way they look and other things. It kinda helped me understand other peoples perspectives because you shouldnt say anything about them unless they want your opinion.

i think this story was really touching. it made people think how you should treat people. just because someones black dont look at them different. like in the story the lady locked her doors when the black guy walked by.i like black people there is nothing wrong with them. where i live im really not exposed to that much black people.
But if i lived by them i would hang out with them. just if you hear something about a black gang kills somebody. a white person could do the same. just thunk you cant judge a book by looking at its cover.

In the story "Black Men in Public Spaces" i learned alot about stereo typing. many young adults these days get stero typed which means looked upon because someone of your race, culture, school, teams, and many more did something. Many people these days get looked upon wrong because there different.
The story starts out with this young african american walks down the street and a white lady thinks he is goin to mug her, rape her, or even worse. Many times he is confronted with this problem such as he went into to a store for something for a paper and the people in the store thing he is going to rob the store. He has seen many deaths in his life and he wants to make something good of his life.
I have learned from this story not to judge a book by its cover. Which means not to judge people just because there a little different or something.
